Jacobson’s body armor bills

The Fray reports:

Assemblyman Jonathan Jacobson has introduced two bills in response to the recent mass shooting in Dayton that would forbid anyone other than a law enforcement officer from owning a bullet-proof vest and make it a separate crime for a civilian to wear a bullet-proof vest while committing any other offense. “Unless you are actively working in law enforcement or in a handful of occupations, there is no legitimate reason to purchase or own a bullet-proof vest,” Jacobson, a City of Newburgh Democrat, said in a statment. “Bullet-proof vests are necessary to protect those whose professions put them at risk of injury. Otherwise, bullet-proof vests are used by those hoping to protect themselves while committing crimes.” …”

That’s just nonsense.

Bills in question are A-8538 and A-8539.

Overplayed their hand

The Daily News writes:

“Democrats in New York and around the country pounced on President Trump and Republicans for their inaction on gun violence as the nation reels from the 25th mass shooting this year. “They’ll send thoughts and prayers to Odessa and Midland. Like they did after El Paso,” Mayor de Blasio tweeted. “They’ll stall and wait out the anger. Like they do every time. We have to BREAK the cycle. We need leaders to LEAD. Mitch McConnell: Bring the Senate back to pass commonsense gun control NOW.” … Gov. Cuomo was exasperated as well, demanding in a terse statement, “Mr. President: DO SOMETHING. “How many more families will lose loved ones, how many more communities will be torn apart?” he said. “How many more tragedies will it take before “leaders” act? The bloodshed must end now …”

Attempting to shame the Trump might be more effective were it not for the fact that Democrats, especially these two, have been dumping on him constantly about every little thing. Trump simply has nothing to gain by kowtowing to their hysterics and as Politico notes:

“Following Saturday’s shootings in West Texas, President Donald Trump on Sunday remained firm that his “administration is committed to working with Congress to stop the menace of mass attacks” but did not include universal background checks as part of the solution this time …”

Why should he? Aside from the fact that they don’t work and are unenforceable does anyone really believe that if Trump took De Blasio’s/Cuomo’s advice either one of them would praise him in public, let alone endorse him for re-election? Of course not. Republicans, especially New York Republicans could learn a lot from this.

Californication

The Epoch Times was soliciting comments for a story on California gun laws so I decided to chime in:

“… “Advocates for gun safety and gun rights such as Jacob Rieper, editor of “Gun Politics New York,” the state will only see a difference in gun-related crime rates by “[scrapping] most of the gun control laws and [giving everyone] the right to carry.” Furthermore, he told The Epoch Times, news outlets should “stop making these killers into celebrities by broadcasting their names and faces on TV all the time.” …”

Not exactly what I sent in, but close enough.

McConnell, GOP fire back at Dems over SCOTUS

Showing some spine, Mitch McConnell fired back at Democrats who tried to intimidate SCOTUS:

“U.S. Senate Republicans accused five Democratic colleagues of threatening the Supreme Court with political retribution in an extraordinary clash over what is set to be the court’s first case on gun rights in a decade. In a letter to the court that used language normally reserved for the political arena, the 53 Republicans said the Democrats were threatening to add additional justices to the court if it doesn’t drop the gun-rights case as moot. “The implication is as plain as day: Dismiss this case, or we’ll pack the court,” Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and his 52 Republican colleagues said in the letter Thursday …”

Good for them.

Most of the time the only response Republicans give to Democrat attacks is silence.  Far too often they backtrack in a pathetic attempt to curry favor with a hostile media.

What McConnell ought to do now is schedule a vote on the Senate version of the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act, S.69.

Nobody wants this

According to the Poughkeepsie Journal:

Marc Molinaro made quite an entrance at the Schoharie County Republican Party’s annual summer fundraiser Sunday. The Dutchess County executive and 2018 gubernatorial candidate helicoptered in — literally — to make an appearance as those in attendance noshed on clams and barbecue at a Cobleskill driving range and mini-golf course. Molinaro’s arrival at the GOP event in the rural county west of Albany turned heads, not just because of the roar of the engine. It came as some Republican officials are mentioning him as a possible challenger to Rep. Antonio Delgado …”

His godawful campaign for Governor last year should have ended all talk like this. That is hasn’t shows the New York GOP has learned nothing from the man-beating they got at the polls.
