Bill requiring Health Dept. promote antigun narratives
New bill introduced to the Health Committee by Councilman Shaun Abreu, INT 1098-2023, Requiring the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene to develop materials on the dangers of keeping a gun in the home.
From the bill text:
“… No later than 6 months after the effective date of the local law that added this section, the department, in consultation with the Office for Neighborhood Safety and the Prevention of Gun Violence, shall develop written materials containing information about the dangers of keeping a gun in the home. The department shall update the content of such materials on a yearly basis to reflect any changes in law, public health research, or both. Such materials shall include, but need not be limited to, the following information:
- Legal requirements pertaining to the safe storage of guns, including but not limited to rifles, shotguns, and firearms;
- Best practices for the safe storage of guns, including but not limited to rifles, shotguns, and firearms;
- Details regarding gun buyback programs;
- Health risk factors and exacerbation factors for gun injuries;
- Statistics on fatal and nonfatal shootings in the city;
- How to recognize at-risk persons for suicide and involvement in gun violence; and
- The relationship between intimate partner violence and gun violence.

Reclaim 2A rights in blue states
There is some opportunity for political action in this week’s primary elections:
- Mayor of Yonkers: 3-way Democrat primary. Vote AGAINST incumbent Mayor Mike Spano. I have not forgotten about him from his time in the Assembly when he told some constituents who were lobbying for 2A that he didn’t believe it was difficult to get an unrestricted pistol license because he had one.
- Queens District Attorney: 3-way Democrat primary. Vote AGAINST incumbent Melinda Katz. Katz has been a strong supporter of gun control her entire career and has been endorsed by Gov. Hochul.
Primary turnout is always low. If the incumbents lose, it’s a big victory for 2A. If they win, we can still claim partial credit for making them spend money to defend their seats.
This is how we can reclaim 2A rights in New York and other blue states. There’s no need for long, pointless discussion of “the facts”, what’s right or what’s wrong, the Constitution or anything else. Vote pro-gun or 2A activists will back your election opponents no matter who they are to get rid of you. All politicians can understand this and can respect it, even if they don’t like it as it directly affects them unlike lawsuits which nobody cares about as they go on all the time and have no effect on elections.

“On Tuesday, a group of House Democrats, including Hudson Valley Rep. Pat Ryan, announced plans to attempt an end-run around GOP leadership to force a vote on banning military-style semi-automatic guns and enhancing background checks for gun purchases. They introduced a legislative tool called a discharge petition. If they get a majority of House lawmakers to sign on, they can bring the bills up for consideration. “We’re not going to stick by the old rules. We’re not going to wait for [Speaker] Kevin McCarthy, his MAGA extremist allies, who all day long lecture about public safety and crime,” Ryan said …”
The antis in Albany used to do this when Republicans still controlled the State Senate as well.
The chicken-shit Republicans never do this. It won’t work legislative, but it does help politically by keeping their agenda alive and putting the opposition on the defensive. It generates media attention and helps with fundraising. Republicans, especially in Albany, are too cowardly and stupid to do this on any issue. This is a major reason why they are now super-minority in the state legislature.
