Schneiderman digging around

Something is up with Eric Schneiderman.  The A.G.’s office has been contacting county clerks around the state for information on pistol licenses: how many have been issued, what sort of restrictions are placed on them, etc.

Kirwan won

Tom Kirwan has finally won AD-100 after the appeals court ruled 4-0 on invalid ballots.  Shelly has lost his supermajority in the Assembly and that will have widespread positive political ramifications.  We go from D-rated Frank Skartados back to A-rated Kirwan.

Good effort

We came up a little short in yesterday’s special election.  With turnout even lower than I expected, MaryJane Shimsky won with 55% of the vote.

It was a good effort nevertheless, considering registered Democrats outnumber Republicans almost 3-1 in the district.

Westchester special election

There is a special election Tuesday for Westchester Board of Legislators in District 12, in/around Greenburg.  One of the candidates, MaryJane Shimsky, is a fan of gun control.  From the January 14 issue of the Journal News:

“… Shimsky … wants to protect county-funded services and programs such as the Cornell Cooperative Extension, and the rights of residents, including gun control …”

Residents have a right to gun control?

Unfortunately due to the enrollment makeup of the district,  she’s likely going to win, although with low turnout it is conceivable opponent Nicholas DeCicco could pull off an upset.

Corwin leading GOP pack

Assemblywoman Jane Corwin seems to be the leading contender for the Republican nomination in CD-26.  Other big names including Senators Joe Robach and George Maziarz along with Monroe Co. Exec. Maggie Brooks have said they’re not running.  From a RKBA standpoint, her record in Albany is acceptable.

Some possible Democrat candidates include Erie Co. Clerk Kathy Hochul, Erie Co. Comptroller Mark Poloncarz, Amherst Town Councilman Mark Manna and former primary candidate Jon Powers.  None have public records on gun issues that I’m aware of.

Legislative Report #4

Legislative Report #4 is now online.

CD-26 opens up

Congressman Chris Lee resigned yesterday after it became known he was trolling for women on Craigslist.  No word yet on when a special election will be held.  All the potential GOP nominees I’ve seen mentioned thus far are A & B rated.  I have not seen any Democrat names floated yet.

RES 6.21.11 passes

The Albany Common Council passed a memorializing resolution RES 6.21.11R yesterday calling upon Congress to approve Carolyn McCarthy’s magazine prohibition bill H.R. 308.  One Councilman voted against it, Lester Freeman.  The Times Union reports:

“Local gun rights supporters may have found an unlikely ally in Albany’s South End councilman … Lester Freeman, who represents the South End’s 2nd Ward, without explanation, logged the only dissenting vote … “It’s not something we should be wasting time with,” was Freeman’s first response.  But he elaborated that he’s also had a pistol permit “for the past 15 years” and that he worries about the gradual erosion of the right to bear arms bestowed by the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.  “It just seems like the more regulations we have to impose that have to do with the second amendment, it bothers me,” said Freeman, who is in his first term. “It’s an assault. It’s an attack.”  “Guns don’t kill people, it’s people with guns who kill people,” Freeman said. “I guess I’m the only conservative voice on the council. I’ve been feeling out place lately.” …”

Good for him.

Who cares what Vincent D’Onofrio thinks?

Playing a cop on television does not qualify Vincent D’Onofrio to speak out on gun control.
