Antis not attacking Ryan

Paul Ryan’s pro-gun credentials are making the rounds in the media.

From Business Week:

“… Another strong opinion held by the presumptive Republican vice presidential nominee, although not one that has received much attention so far, is that he is very, very pro-gun.  His passion for hunting and for gun rights could make a critical difference in battleground states …”

Dave Workman adds:

“… Mitt Romney’s choice of Wisconsinite Paul Ryan as his running mate was a bold move on more than one level, and one that should hit the right nerve with American gun owners worried about Romney’s record on gun rights … Adding Ryan to the ticket brings credibility with gun owners; a commodity Republicans need to get gun owners off the couches and away from their keyboards to the voting booths. Where Romney certainly can depend upon Ryan’s savvy with a budget, he should also rely on the congressman’s counsel where gun and hunting rights are concerned …”

I agree with this.  What I find interesting, though, is that I have not seen the antis attacking Ryan yet.  Considering how much blood-dancing they’ve been doing lately I would have assumed they’d jump on him right from the start.

Romney-Ryan

Mitt Romney chose Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan as his running mate.

I don’t think the pick does anything to diminish Romney’s campaign and should help make the ticket more palatable to special interests (gun owners) concerned about Romney’s record. Ryan has a pro-gun record in Congress.

David Berkowitz, gun control advocate

I would have thought that the antis were scrapping the bottom when they trotted out Eliot Spitzer, but Oh, no.  Their latest spokesman is “Son of Sam” David Berkowtiz:

“David Berkowitz, who shot and killed six people during a yearlong spree in New York City in the 1970s, says “society has to take the glory out of guns.” … “I’m looking beyond gun control.  That’s for the legislators to wrangle with,” Berkowitz, 59, said.  “My hope is just that young people would understand just how terrible this violence is.  When they use a gun against someone else, they ruin their lives too.  It’s not worth it.” …”

This coming from the guy who murdered six people and wounded several more because he claimed his neighbor’s dog told him to.

A bad time to stop sniffing glue

According to Mayor Mike, the way to win the presidency is to start pushing gun control:

“… “I think the ways to get a majority of them would be to stand up and say, ‘Look, I’m not gonna be president of the United States and have 48,000 people killed, murdered with illegal guns in the next four years in my term. I’m just not going to do that,'” he said, during his regular Friday morning radio appearance on the John Gambling Show. “‘And here’s what I’ll do. Now, Congress may not pass it. But I’m gonna work as hard as I can. This is where I stand.’ And I think that’s the ways that they would get a majority of that 20 percent, which is what they need to win …”

That would explain why the candidates are running away from him and the issue as fast as they can.

You really have to wonder what is going through his head to make statements like this ….

Spitzer’s opinion

Eliot “The Steamroller” Spitzer has been trying to revive his political career lately.  Now he’s decided to jump in on the gun control debate:

“… They could use government’s power in the marketplace—as the largest purchaser of guns—to force the companies we buy from to act responsibly …”

This was done before and it nearly bankrupted Smith & Wesson.  You just know the antis are desperate when the best they can do is trot out disgraced politicians to support their positions.  It’s just more evidence that the gun control movement is morally and intellectually bankrupt.

Supporting Woollard v. Sheridan

We have filed an Amicus Curiae in support of the Woollard v. Sheridan case supporting a district court decision ruling that found Maryland’s may-issue CCW system unconstitutional on 2nd Amendment grounds.  While Maryland is in the 4th Circuit and New York is in the 2nd, Maryland law is based upon the Sullivan Act.  A win in the 4th District could be beneficial to us down the road if a discretionary licensing challenge makes it to SCOTUS.

Exploiting tradegy for political gain

Some of the usual suspects in Albany are hoping to exploit the Sikh temple shooting in Wisconsin to push for more gun control in New York.  I had a roughly 15 minute interview with a New York Times reporter this afternoon who was doing a story about it and got in one good point:

“… But Jacob J. Rieper, the vice president of legislative and political affairs for the New York State Rifle and Pistol Association, said lawmakers were trying to capitalize on the mass shootings to push their own agendas.   “They’re trying to throw out a bunch of stuff basically to see what sticks,” Mr. Rieper said, adding, “Since when has taking guns from decent people prevented bad people from committing crime?” …”

What didn’t make it in print is that sometime later this year there will be a special legislative session and NYAGV and the Senate Democrats are trying to get microstamping on the agenda.  That is what this is all about.

He’s done this before with both broadcast and print adverts and gotten bupkis in return. There is no reason to assume this latest buy will be any more effective.
