Declaring Times Square a crime free zone

Councilman Joe Borelli is a savage. He introduced a bill to City Council INT 873-2023 amending the administrative code of the City of New York, in relation to designating Times Square a crime free zone:

“… The area commonly known as Times Square, as described in subdivision a of this section, is designated a crime free zone. The police department, in collaboration with the department of transportation, shall install and maintain signs throughout such area that clearly and conspicuously identify it as a crime free zone …”

Another gun control push by Hochul is coming

Governor Hochul is going to make a push for even more gun control this year. From her inaugural speech:

“… Without offering specifics, she broadly vowed to crack down on hate crimes and tackle gun violence so that “New Yorkers can walk our streets, ride our subways and our kids can go to school, free from fear.” …”

This absolutely means more gun control.

Buffalo and Rochester suing gun makers

Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown and Rochester Mayor Malik Evans announced today that they will be suing gun manufactures under the new law the state legislature passed this session A-6762B/S-7196 allowing such suits to proceed based upon a public nuisance provision.

They may ultimately get tossed out based upon either the PLCAA or maybe Bruen, but not before running up large legal bills the industry will ultimately pass along to consumers.

No recession for gun control advocates

We may be in an recession, but the FY2023 New York City budget contains a $120,000 allocation for New Yorkers Against Gun Violence though the Crisis Management System, a big increase from $65,000 in FY2022.

It’s all about priorities.

Lead standards bill vetoed

A-5541B/S-8050A, Establishes environmental standards for ambient lead and lead contamination, has been Vetoed by the Governor.

I could see this being used in a way to target shooting ranges.  The relevant clause:

“The Departments of Environmental Conservation and Health shall propose new standards, and update any existing standards as appropriate, for dust lead hazards, soil-lead hazards and ambient air quality standards for the level of lead in various media that will result in blood lead levels that are no higher than a target that is fully protective of human health and which at a minimum include consideration of recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control.”
