Buffalo and Rochester suing gun makers

Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown and Rochester Mayor Malik Evans announced today that they will be suing gun manufactures under the new law the state legislature passed this session A-6762B/S-7196 allowing such suits to proceed based upon a public nuisance provision.

They may ultimately get tossed out based upon either the PLCAA or maybe Bruen, but not before running up large legal bills the industry will ultimately pass along to consumers.

No recession for gun control advocates

We may be in an recession, but the FY2023 New York City budget contains a $120,000 allocation for New Yorkers Against Gun Violence though the Crisis Management System, a big increase from $65,000 in FY2022.

It’s all about priorities.

Lead standards bill vetoed

A-5541B/S-8050A, Establishes environmental standards for ambient lead and lead contamination, has been Vetoed by the Governor.

I could see this being used in a way to target shooting ranges.  The relevant clause:

“The Departments of Environmental Conservation and Health shall propose new standards, and update any existing standards as appropriate, for dust lead hazards, soil-lead hazards and ambient air quality standards for the level of lead in various media that will result in blood lead levels that are no higher than a target that is fully protective of human health and which at a minimum include consideration of recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control.”

More gun control coming from Albany

Not surprised by this at all:

Gov. Kathy Hochul plans to propose “a very comprehensive” plan to staunch the tide of illegal guns into New York, she signaled on Monday ahead of her State of the State address in the coming weeks … The governor did not give specifics on her plan, but does plan on expanding resources for the State Police as well as leaning on an existing multi-state task force that started earlier in the year to tackle the issue of illegal firearms …”

Dick move by Ryan

The Post reports:

“… Sen. Sean Ryan (D-Buffalo) is pushing to stop [NRA] from promoting gun safety in New York. Newly-introduced legislation would do that by stripping the group of its near monopoly over certifying the “duly authorized instructor” any New Yorker needs to complete the safety training required for a conceal carry permit per state laws passed last summer. “Where the NRA was once viewed as an authority on gun safety, it has become an extremist organization that prioritizes political advocacy at the expense of safety,” argues a legislative memo attached to the bill introduced this week. “The NRA has pursued an extreme political agenda focused on overturning gun safety laws here in New York and across the nation. Through its conduct as an organization, the NRA has proven to no longer be an authority on gun safety,” the memo adds. … “New York state has no control over the curriculum taught about safety to get a pistol permit issued by New York State. [That] doesn’t seem to make a lot of sense,” Ryan, a longtime Hochul ally, told The Post …”

Ryan knows that’s BS, but I can see this bill passing next year.

Supermajorities

It looks like Democrats will keep their super-majorities in Albany and running an antigun Republican in the Syracuse seat is what put Democrats over the top in the Senate.

Albany Co. approves gun control measures

Albany County adopts new gun control in the wake of Bruen decision:

“… On Monday, Legislators approved a resolution to establish the Detailed Instruction Supporting Community Violence Education and Reduction (DISCOVER) program. In partnership with the Sheriff’s Office, the program would focus on supporting firearm education and training for legal gun owners and reducing the number of illegal guns in local communities … The DISCOVER program would offer pistol training courses for County residents run by the Sheriff’s Office; an anonymous illegal firearm tip line for individuals to report information about illegally possessed guns and a potential $500 reward if the tip results in seizure of a firearm; gun buyback events that incentivize individuals to surrender firearms in exchange for cash; and free gun locking mechanisms and instructions regarding best practices in keeping and storing guns at various events throughout the county …”

This is just fluff, meant to mollify gun owners into thinking they’re not the target of these proposals.

You can already get firearms instruction through local clubs, NRA instructors and private businesses.

The tip-line probably won’t accomplish much.

NSSF gives out free gun locks.

So-called gun buybacks are a fraud.

“… In addition to the DISCOVER program, the Legislature also adopted a local law to ban the possession of deadly weapons and dangerous instruments in Albany County facilities by individuals other than those on official business authorized to carry a such weapons. Signs will be posted at County building warning individuals that possession of a firearm, rifle shotgun or other deadly weapon, dangerous instrument, explosive device and/or poisonous gas is prohibited. Individuals caught carrying such weapons could be charged with an unclassified misdemeanor and subject to a fine not to exceed $1,000 or imprisonment up to 90 days …”

This is the last thing they need to do.  Gun Free Zones are a magnet for mass murderers.
