Proving our point

Bloomberg news reports, “NRA-Branded Insurance Program Is Unlawful, New York Regulators Say“:

“A National Rifle Association-branded insurance program unlawfully provided liability coverage to gun owners in the event they were charged with a crime involving their firearms, according to New York state regulators … The group advertises Carry Guard as the nation’s “most complete self-defense membership program” on its website, referring to Lockton’s plan as “comprehensive personal firearms liability insurance.” Regulators said the insurance unlawfully offered protection for certain acts of intentional wrongdoing and improperly provided coverage for acts of self defense. Gun control advocates have criticized the program, referring to it as “murder insurance.” …”

I knew this was coming because for years gun control advocates have pushed bills requiring gun owners have liability insurance (currently A-349, A-2260 and S-2857A) and the response has always been it isn’t legal.

While the antis are crowing about this decision now, the NYS Department of Financial Services just nuked one of their key agenda items.

Rats are leaving the sinking ship

For years I have said Republican control of the State Senate cannot continue.  Yet they still have managed to hang on.  I think we have finally reached the point where they know that they will not have the majority come 2019.

Last week there was this in the Poughkeepise Journal, “3 NY Senate Republicans drop re-election bids in 3 days”:

“… State Sen. John Bonacic, a Republican who has represented the Hudson Valley in the Legislature for nearly three decades, will not seek re-election this fall … Sen. Kathy Marchione, R-Halfmoon, Saratoga County, announced Wednesday she wouldn’t run in November, citing a desire to spent more time with her family. Senate Deputy Majority Leader John DeFrancisco, R-DeWitt, Onondaga County, told the Auburn Citizen he too wouldn’t seek re-election …”

This week the Post reports, “Two more GOP state senators may bow out”:

“… Long Island Sen. Tom Croci and Hudson Valley Sen. Bill Larkin both admitted they’re considering giving up their seats …”

Larkin is older than dirt and already has one foot in the ground so his leaving would be understandable. Croci is a relatively young guy.

Looking at enrollment statistics, Senate Districts 3, 39 and 42 are now majority Democrat.  SD-43 has a slight Republican advantage and SD-50 is evenly split.  Republicans would have a hard time keeping these seats even with incumbents running.

Brindisi Runs Away From NRA Rating

The Washington Free Beacon reports on Congressional candidate Anthony Brindisi distancing himself from his NRAA” rating by calling for a ban on high-capacity magazines and expanding firearm background checks at a April 8 town hall meeting sponsored by the Colgate University College Democrats.

DFS memo on doing business with NRA

Last week Governor Cuomo announced he was encouraging banks to review their relationship with the NRA and firearms industry:

“… The governor directed New York’s Department of Financial Services to urge state-chartered banks and the more than 1,400 insurers it regulates to review whether their ties to the NRA and similar groups sends the “wrong message” to clients and communities. “This is not just a matter of reputation, it is a matter of public safety,” Cuomo said in a statement …”

Here is a PDF copy of the memorandum.

32

With wins in yesterday’s special elections, Democrats now have a numeric 32 seat majority in the State Senate.

Bonus:  Republicans even lost a Long Island Assembly seat they’ve held for 40 years.

The only thing keeping the Republicans alive is that Governor Cuomo and enough members of his own party do not want the Democrats in charge of the upper house.  No matter what baloney is said public about party unity their actions say otherwise.

If the Democrats seriously want full control of the legislature look for these things to happen:

The Set Up

Governor Cuomo does not want the Democrat clown caucus in charge of the State Senate.

With the Republicans on track to lose today’s special election, Democrats should have the numeric majority of 32 seats by tomorrow and Cuomo does not want to put up with their stupidity in an election year.

Let’s look at the facts.

From City & State, “Felder: Cuomo hasn’t talked to me about reuniting the Senate since 2017“:

State Sen. Simcha Felder says he’s still waiting for a call from Gov. Andrew Cuomo … The governor has not spoken to Felder on the topic of rejoining the Democrats since well before the IDC announced it was dissolving and folding back into the Democratic party, Felder said. Furthermore, he said, no one gave him any advance notice about the IDC’s plans to reunite, either. “The governor has not. We have not had a conversation recently,” Felder told City & State …”

I know more on this is coming in the next day or two.
