Co-ordinated gun control rallies organized by Mayor Bloomberg’s proxy Everytown are taking place across the country and state.
Here is some media coverage of the one in Rockland:
Incumbent Congressman Antonio Delgado continues to shill for more gun control:
Glad to see my colleagues in the House taking action following the shootings in El Paso & Dayton to address gun violence. We will continue to call on Senator McConnell to #DoSomething & take up the House-passed bipartisan background check legislation, HR8. https://t.co/Oy5NCkD6R4

So far three Republican challengers have declared their intent to seek the party’s nomination to run against him next year in CD-19. Anthony German appears to be the most serious among them. I do not know his position on 2A.

“… The Judiciary Committee is poised to return to the beltway on September 4, the Wednesday before the lower chamber’s six-week long recess is set to end. [Congressman Jerrold] Nadler says the panel will examine three gun violence prevention bills, and then hold a hearing on military-style assault weapons later in September …”
Brady chimes in:
JUST IN: @RepJerryNadler is calling the @HouseJudiciary back from recess to hold urgent hearings on gun safety legislation.
Sept 4: Hearing on high-capacity magazine ban, #DisarmHate, extreme risk laws
Sept 25: Hearing on assault weapons ban

This is nothing more than pre-planned political theater aimed at pressuring the Senate to take up some sort of gun control legislation.
I believe the bills in question are H.R.1186/S.447, H.R.1236/S.506 and H.R.1296/S.66. See also “Assault weapons ban picks up steam in Congress.“
Congressman Brindisi spoke to the Observer-Dispatch on a number of issues including guns:
“… As he’s said before, Brindisi said he believes there are “common sense” reforms lawmakers could enact without restricting a person’s Second Amendment rights. He believes the House supports and has approved such regulations with recent legislation, saying the onus is now on the Senate — specifically, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell — to bring these measures to a vote. “We passed a bipartisan bill in the House on background checks. Mitch McConnell can call the Senate back tomorrow to pass that same bill,” he said. “He’s not doing that. I don’t know why, but it should be done.” …”
The bill in question is H.R.8.
The reason McConnell isn’t hot on it is twofold:
“… “I don’t think anyone wants to restrict a law-abiding gun owner’s right to have access to a firearm,” he added, “But more has to be done to keep firearms out of the hands of dangerous people, criminals, people who are violently mentally ill, folks who commit domestic abuse. They should not have access to firearms.”” …”
All of this is already illegal.
If he’s not trying to restrict gun rights then prove it by co-sponsoring the reciprocity bill H.R.38.
WRVO reports on attempts to intimidate Congressman Katko:
“Protesters in Syracuse are demanding Rep. John Katko (R-Camillus) do something on gun control following the recent shootings … Donna Oppedisano, a teacher at Jamesville-DeWitt High School, said her worst nightmare is the shooting of students in her school. She said she was outraged when she saw an advertisement for Kevlar backpacks for kids to carry to school. “What will it take Representative Katko, for you to stand up in support of sensible gun measures?” Oppedisano said. “Universal background checks. Why won’t you stand up for universal background checks? Why won’t you stand up for a ban on assault weapons?” … Speaking with reporters in Oswego last week about the shootings, Katko said the rhetoric on both sides of the aisle needs to tone down … Katko is pushing a red flag bill he introduced last year that would take guns away from someone deemed a threat. He is less concerned with universal background checks, he said, which already passed the House, and currently exists in New York State. Katko’s spokesperson would not say if he would support a ban on assault weapons.”
Even though it appears to have been only a handful of wackos (Oppedisano has done this before, see examples 1, 2 and 3) I don’t trust Katko on 2A.
Governor Cuomo is going to hold a gun control event tomorrow, 8/15 @ noon at the New York City Bar Association, 42 W. 44th St., Manhattan.
I’m going to assume it will be a rehash of his 4-Point Plan he wants the Democrat presidential candidates to endorse.
A follow-up to last week’s post about Gun Kingpins, Assembly bill A-674 now has a Senate companion S-6649.
