Cuomo calls in the Brady’s

Last week it was announced that Cuomo’s cronies had created their own gun control group.  This week it was announced that they will be running ads in the state:

“The state Democratic Committee announced today it will be promoting its agenda — and one backed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo — through ads and mobilization efforts in New York and the nation … The party said in a news release that it is setting up committees on the issues of … gun safety …  A Democratic official clarified that while the effort will promote national issues, the effort will only be in New York and the ads will only run in the state.  The effort will also promote Cuomo’s agenda back home, including gun control … The first ad campaign will focus on gun violence and feature Sarah and Jim Brady calling on Washington to pass comprehensive gun legislation …”

I’m having trouble deciding which is the dumber idea: Trying to promote an agenda that caused a huge drop in the Governor’s popularity or digging up these two fossils to use as mouthpieces for that agenda.

It’s almost as if Cuomo is stuck in the early 90s, when gun control and the Brady’s were de rigueur amongst the Democrat elite.  Even a cursory glance at the political landscape would show that a lot has changed over the last 20 years.  From a purely political standpoint, gun control is not a winning issue with the public and no group has the ability to deliver any money/manpower/votes to supportive candidates at election time.  I don’t even see the gun control groups talking much about elections anymore.  Is Cuomo really that out of touch that he does not see this?

  1. There is something to be said for losing gracefully. But instead of listening to 50+ out of 60 counties and 100+ towns and Sheriffs – this guy is going all in with the hopes he’ll be the democratic party’s next presidential nominee. Disgraceful.

  2. They better not be funding this with our tax money. It’s bad enough they want to take our constitutional rights away, but to do it with our own tax dollars should be a crime. A legislator should sponcer a bill for that.

  3. While they pass legislation that strips our rights in multiple states, we gripe. While they run ads to sway public opinion, we mock them. However, the fact remains that they are winning and we are losing. While their ads may not sway you, they will sway many. While you may know that an ar15 is not fully automatic weapon of war — the public, including many gunnies, thinks otherwise.

If the state and national organizations don’t get a lot more serious about the court of public opinion, the eventual loss of the 2A is a guarantee. We cannot hold the courts without public support.

Cuomo still has a majority of support. He still does not have a valid competitor. Incumbent senators rarely lose, and whom would they be replaced with if they were? Pro2A? Maybe. Likely not. Demographics very much favor the progressive agenda in our state, and is trending in their favor in many others.

Perhaps the strategy of fighting this in the courts will continue to work this time, but it will not always work.

  4. There’s a lot to be said for losing gracefully…. This is just sad…. He would be better off saying, “Listen, I tried sneaking a law by you to take away your Second Amendment right and make me the the next democratic presidential nominee because I thought it was the right thing to do – but it’s clear the majority of counties, towns and Sheriffs don’t agree with me – so I have listened, learned and respect the democratic process.” But no, this jack hole is like too many other politicians – and he’s going to do whatever it takes to win because he thinks he’s right and we’re all idiots. Anyone who has studied gun control knows it doesn’t work because CRIMINALS DON’T OBEY LAWS – and the problem isn’t guns – it’s our judicial system – gangs – drugs – and mental health. You cannot protect citizens by disarming them – that is simply immoral. This guy really must go!

  5. I don’t care if he calls in Carol , Mike, Greg, Marcia, Peter, Jan, Bobby
Cindy and Ann B. Davis as Alice. The people don’t want it. The law is unconstitutional. GET RID OF IT.

  6. holdtheline is right. But its not that they are winning, its that they have won (past tense). I grew up in the city and lived in a family full of these scumbags (progressives / commies), went to school with them (in the honors classes), and have been fighting them all of my 59 years on this earth. I saw this happening as a kid. They already had the media, the UFT, and the universities. For decades there was no fox news or internet and no way to fight their brainwashing campaigns (except me and a very few others shouting at them in social studies classes until our throats were bleeding). They managed to shift the norm to where we, who would have been considered good mainstream Americans who believe in freedom and the US Constitution at that time, are now viewed as right wing extremists. All their public policies promoted the worst and the dumbest and they multiplied in geometric progressions, expanding their base and their power. That was not fast enough, so they opened the southern border. There is your demographics shift. Its a miracle that we held them (antis) off so long in NY when all they had to do was get through once, and tragically, thats what happened this time. In 1973, to my horror, I watched the fall of Saigon. In 2013, to my far greater horror, I watched the fall of Colorado. And the only things that I can imagine reversing this now are things that I do not want to write in a blog, and I don’t believe they will ever happen. The whole thing will fall with a whimper. Not a day goes by that I don’t wake up in the morning sick over it.
