Gun control possibly next week

LCA reporter Tom Precious reports that gun control will be on the legislature’s agenda next week.  That’s a little sooner than I expected.  Last I checked the bills on Gov. Cuomo’s issues have not been introduced.

Session days are Monday and Tuesday.

The Daily News reports:

“… A disgraced ex-NYPD lieutenant facing sentencing for bribery conspiracy has spilled the beans on the depth of alleged corruption in the department’s License Division … Former Lt. Paul Dean says in papers filed in Manhattan Federal Court Wednesday that a culture of corruption within the division responsible for processing city gun permits was enabled by former Commissioner Bill Bratton, among others …”

The Sullivan Act was designed to do this.

“… Dean details a litany of favors for powerful people by his supervisor, former Deputy Inspector Mike Endall. Dean says that Endall was acting at the behest of Bratton. Among the alleged favors: Endall allowed Donald Trump Sr., Attorney Michael Cohen, Donald Trump Jr, to obtain full carry gun licenses even though the proper credentials allegedly were not in the file because of their generous donations to the Police Athletic League or the NYC Police Foundation …”

Greasing the wheels of justice.

“… Gun licenses were approved for John Catsimatidis, Former SONY CEO Thomas Mottola, Morgan Stanley CEO John Mack, Estee Lauder’s Ronald Lauder, late Fox News CEO Roger Ailes and Sean Hannity despite them allegedly not meeting qualifications …”

Those qualifications being spreading enough cash around to the right people.

“… A gun license for actor Tracy Morgan despite him having a prior felony conviction …”

He’s not the only one.

This would not have happened if New York and especially New York City were right-to-carry.  Don’t expect any local media outlets to bring that fact up.

“A Gravesend man may spend the rest of his days behind bars for brutally shooting another man to death during an anti-gun-violence event in a neighborhood park, Brooklyn’s top prosecutor said. A judge on Wednesday sentenced 36-year-old Raheem Dunaway to 25 years to life in prison for gunning down 30-year-old Daquan Spencer on Aug. 21, 2016 in Scarangella Park amidst the tribute to gun-violence victims … Dunaway began confronting and arguing with event attendees before randomly approaching Spencer … and firing 20 bullets at him around 1:30 am, according to prosecutors, who said the anti-gun-violence event lasted until the early morning hours …”

He violated the so-called SAFE Act too.

Grand Island resolution supporting 2A

The Town of Grand Island will take up a resolution in opposition to Governor Cuomo’s proposed gun control expansion and reaffirming their support for the 2nd Amendment at the next Town Council meeting on Tuesday the 22nd at 8:00pm.

Here is a copy of the resolution.

Councilman Mike Madigan is encouraging town residents to contact the council and attend the meeting to show their support.

Legislative update

With solid majorities in both chambers Democrats do not seem to be in any hurry to reintroduce old bills with new numbers for the current session.

Based upon action in previous years these are likely to come up:

  • A-1054, requires the creation and imposition of restrictive commercial practices and stringent record-keeping and reporting to prevent gun sales to criminals
  • A-1251, microstamping
  • S-1764, “Nicholas’s law”, mandatory firearms storage, companion to A-503

I am still waiting for legislation on the items Gov. Cuomo asked for. A bump-stock ban bill was introduced by Senator Lanza, S-1337, but since he’s a Republican I doubt that is the bill they are going to move.
