Perry v. Romney

Now that Rick Perry has formally announced he’s running, the battle for the GOP presidential nomination comes down to either him or Mitt Romney.  I do not think Michele Bachmann has the gravitas to go the distance and will eventually drop out.  The other currently declared candidates are not going anywhere.  I don’t see Sarah Palin jumping in.  She seems to be setting herself up more as power broker than as a candidate.  Realistically then, who else is there?  Rudy Giuliani?  George Pataki?  Neither have any creditability.   That leaves Perry and Romney to duke it out.

From a RKBA standpoint, Perry is the easily the better choice.  He carries a gun himself and is not afraid to use it.

Perry is ideologically closer to the GOP base than Romney and would probably edge him out in a 2-way primary, but if Bachmann sticks around Romney could win the nomination with a plurality of the votes.  In the general election I don’t think it matters as much if it is Perry or Romney as Obama is heading towards a meltdown.

Picente v. Potocki

Utica Uprising has a good piece on the Oneida County Executive’s race between incumbent Republican Anthony Picente and Conservative Rodger Potocki.  Along with outgoing Utica Mayor David Roefaro, Picente has been a cheerleader for MAIG’s gun control proposals in upstate.  It would have been nice if the Democrats put up a candidate because it will be very difficult for Potocki to defeat him only on a minor party line.

Change we can all believe in

The latest Quinnipiac poll shows Obama’s negatives are higher than his positives for the first time in New York of all places.  If this trend holds he’s toast in ’12.

The thing to now watch for is to see if the Republicans and specifically Mitt Romney start campaigning in the state.

Excuse me while I whip this out

Despite the heavy Democrat enrollment advantage, the race to fill Anthony Weiner’s Congressional seat is quite close according to the latest poll with Democrat David Weprin leading Republican Bob Turner by 6%.

On RKBA issues, Turner is an unknown.  His main attract is that he is not Weprin, who earned an F based upon his record in both the Clown Council and State Assembly.

The one time Weprin tried taking up the gun issue was when he was in the Clown Council and wanted to prohibit toy guns on the grounds that criminals paint them black and use them to commit crimes.  Weprin felt the need to do some grandstanding and called a press conference.  Not content to simply stand there and bullshit the media about an issue nobody cares about, Weprin decided a live action demonstration was in order.  He had hidden a fully loaded water pistol down the front of his pants.  At the appropriate time it was his intention to pull it out, dramatically proving his point.

Problem was the gun had gotten caught up with his gentleman’s sausage.  When he reached in to pull the toy out, it discharged it’s load of H2O down the front of his pants in full view of the assembled media.  Any normal person would have been embarrassed, but Weprin comes from a family of professional politicians and kept right on going.  He even reintroduced the bill the next year, although he decided to forgo with the theatrics.

Weprin is a career politician who got in based upon his father’s name and has pretty much coasted along without doing much of anything important.  He doesn’t even live in the district.  If elected he’ll reliably vote antigun, although I doubt he’d be at the forefront of the issue.

 

Bozos Belzer and Bratton

I cannot see this latest antigun advocacy ad from Richard Aborn and the NYC Citizens Crime Commission being the least bit effective.

Hugh Carey dead

Former Governor Hugh Carey has died at age 92.

While he may be best remembered for the fiscal crisis in the 70s, he’s also the one who vetoed “shall issue” on the grounds that there was no demonstration that such a law would be in the public interest.

Still trying to intimidate Grimm

The antis are still trying to get Rep. Michael Grimm to sign onto H.R. 308:

Things might be going better for them if they had an actual constituency which in turn lobbied Congress to do whatever it is the antis want.

Still trying to exploit Giffords

Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords returned to work yesterday roughly eight months after her attempted assassination.  The Bradys, CSGV, PEG, NYAGV, etc. are all trying to exploit her for political gain with Protest Easy Guns leading the pack with these tweets:

I’ve been involved with gun rights for nearly 20 years and I still sometimes wonder how the antis can come up with stuff this.  It is such blatant crap that nobody could possibly take it seriously.

 

Where were all these antigun groups before the attempt on her life?  Not one of them showed even the slightest bit of interest in Giffords or her politics before the assassination attempt and nobody in the media is calling them on this.
