Leftists try intimidating Rep. Katko

WRVO reports on attempts to intimidate Congressman Katko:

“Protesters in Syracuse are demanding Rep. John Katko (R-Camillus) do something on gun control following the recent shootings … Donna Oppedisano, a teacher at Jamesville-DeWitt High School, said her worst nightmare is the shooting of students in her school. She said she was outraged when she saw an advertisement for Kevlar backpacks for kids to carry to school. “What will it take Representative Katko, for you to stand up in support of sensible gun measures?” Oppedisano said. “Universal background checks. Why won’t you stand up for universal background checks? Why won’t you stand up for a ban on assault weapons?” … Speaking with reporters in Oswego last week about the shootings, Katko said the rhetoric on both sides of the aisle needs to tone down … Katko is pushing a red flag bill he introduced last year that would take guns away from someone deemed a threat. He is less concerned with universal background checks, he said, which already passed the House, and currently exists in New York State. Katko’s spokesperson would not say if he would support a ban on assault weapons.”

Even though it appears to have been only a handful of wackos (Oppedisano has done this before, see examples 1, 2 and 3) I don’t trust Katko on 2A.

The “red flag” bills he sponsors are H.R.744 and H.R.6747.

Cuomo to address NYC Bar

Governor Cuomo is going to hold a gun control event tomorrow, 8/15 @ noon at the New York City Bar Association, 42 W. 44th St., Manhattan.

I’m going to assume it will be a rehash of his 4-Point Plan he wants the Democrat presidential candidates to endorse.

Gillibrand tries intimidating SCOTUS Justices

CNBC reports, “Kirsten Gillibrand slams the NRA and Federalist Society in Supreme Court filing and warns the court could be restructured“:

“Democratic presidential contenders rolled out new gun control plans in the wake of two mass shootings earlier this month … Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, has diagnosed the problem as part of an “industrial-strength influence campaign” from conservative advocacy groups on the Republican-appointed justices of the Supreme Court — and is making the argument to the judges themselves. The New York lawmaker this week signed on to a friend-of-the-court brief in a high-profile Second Amendment case over now-defunct New York City laws and regulations, urging the justices to drop the matter … “

The Daily Caller offers more insight, “A Pro-Gun Ruling Will Inflame Court-Packing Push, Democratic Senator Warns Supreme Court“:

“… “The Supreme Court is not well. And the people know it. Perhaps the Court can heal itself before the public demands it be ‘restructured in order to reduce the influence of politics,’” [Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse] wrote, alluding to court-packing measures that have gained traction in progressive circles. “Particularly on the urgent issue of gun control, a nation desperately needs it to heal.” …”

I wonder how the left-leaning Justices will react to this sort of intimidation tactics.

Bill de Blasio is calling for a boycott of Walmart over gun control:

“Sixteen Democratic candidates in all passed through Saturday’s gun safety forum hosted by former Mayor Bloomberg’s group, Everytown for Gun Safety. Mayor de Blasio’s late slot meant much of the crowd had cleared out, but he did his best to grab some attention. “They have to feel our wrath,” de Blasio said to the crowd. “They” in this case includes Walmart, which has come under increased pressure to stop the sale of guns after the mass shootings in El Paso and Dayton. De Blasio went a step further, calling for a boycott of the retailer, saying it puts profits over human lives …”

Such a bold plan of action will surely make him standout among the candidates. Where’s he in the polls:

“According to the latest Siena College poll, only 26 percent of voters in New York State had a favorable opinion of the mayor; 57 percent of New Yorkers had an unfavorable opinion. The news gotten even worse for de Blasio and his potential spot in upcoming Democratic debates for president … Both de Blasio and New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand received zero percent support in the 2020 race …”

Polls aren’t always an accurate representation of public sentiment. How was de Blasio greeted in Iowa?

“Mayor Bill de Blasio pitched his presidential dreams to a crowd of about 15 likely Democratic voters at an event Sunday morning in Cedar Rapids, Iowa …”

Seems the polling was accurate.

Department of Financial Services investigating NRA

The next chapter in the NRA’s ongoing shitshow comes from the Post, “NY regulators probing NRA for illegal gun insurance kickbacks”

“The New York Department of Financial Services is investigating the National Rifle Association for its role in offering now-banned insurance products for gun owners in the state — and earning at least $14 million in the process, The Post has learned. The investigation, which hasn’t been previously reported, is an outgrowth of consent agreements last year with insurance companies, ending the sale of NRA-branded Carry Guard insurance, and other similar products, in New York, sources said … The NRA, which isn’t licensed to sell or market insurance in New York, received at least $14 million in payments for helping to sell Carry Guard and other similar products from 2000 to 2008, according to the 2018 consent agreement, which it was not party to. That means the DFS could also go after them for receiving kickbacks for selling insurance, which is not allowed, sources said …”

I can easily see DFS, at a minimum, demanding NRA forfeit the $14 million.

It is inexcusable that the most basic due diligence was not done regarding selling insurance in the state.  I’m not in the business, but even I know there are lots of rules and regulations regarding selling insurance in New York and that a license is required.

The NRA Board (especially Marion Hammer) cannot simply write this off as an attack by gun control advocates.
