God & Guns

Trinity Church in lower Manhattan is trying to get Walmart to stop selling guns:

“… Rev. Dr. James Cooper, says he isn’t seeking a ban on the sale of assault weapons at Walmart.  Rather, he’s fighting to force the world’s largest retailer to include a shareholder proposal in this April’s proxy materials, to be voted on at this summer’s annual meeting …”

I don’t believe that.

“… It was the 2012 massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. that proved the catalyst for Trinity’s legal action, says Rev. Cooper.  He recalls having coffee hour chats with parishioners about ways to help, including shareholder activism …”

This tells me that the good cleric didn’t just think this idea up himself.  One of the antis latest strategies is trying to get people to divest their shares in gun companies.  See Unload Your 401k.  This project, hiding behind astroturf front groups, is based out of Manhattan.

“… One of the smaller investments in Trinity’s diverse portfolio: about $2,000 worth of shares in Walmart  …”

That means they own about 20 shares.

I get to vote on a bunch of stupid proposals like this every year.  Generally any shareholder, or ones that own a certain minimum number of shares, can submit proposals to be voted on by all shareholders of the company.  They all get shot down.  Major holders own 51% of Walmart stock so there is absolutely no way this proposal can pass.  This is a public relations stunt by the church, nothing more.

Yet another MAIG mayor in trouble

MidHudsonNews.com reports, “Mount Vernon mayor sentenced to one year probation“:

“Mount Vernon Mayor Ernest Davis was sentenced in White Plains federal court on Friday to one year of probation and a $10,000 fine.  Davis, 76, pled guilty last October to two counts of willfully failing to file federal income tax returns …”

Davis is/was a member of Mayors Against Illegal Guns.

Hashtag activism

A bunch of Congressional Democrats introduced a 10-rd magazine limit bill.

Unable to produce any sort of genunie public support, they’re going with hashtag activism on Twitter:  SayNo2MoreAmmo.

Title 38 lawsuit update

There has been a decision in NYSRPA’s lawsuit against New York City challenging Title 38.  We lost.  The legal team is reviewing the ruling and considering the options.

Here is a copy of the decision.

Legislative Report #3

Legislative Report #3 is now online.

Same old, same old

Carl Heastie is keeping the same people as Committee Chairs in the Assembly.

No surprise there.  I’m sure the Fudds will be upset that Steve Englebright heads EnCon.  Despite not lifting a finger during the past election some seriously believed they would be in position to influence the decision on chiarmanships.  Instead they got Englebright and his room-temperature IQ.

You knew was coming

Fox News reports, “Pataki exploring 2016 White House run“:

“Former New York Gov. George Pataki told Fox News on Monday he’s “seriously” exploring a 2016 Republican bid for president …”

No.

Pete King’s campaign is more creditable than this.

Good question

Progress Queens asks a good question, “Where is Larry Schwartz?

My guess is he’s hiding from Preet Bharara.  Preet needs to find Larry and put the screws to him.  If Larry rolls over, he will take a lot of politicos with him.

Pete King for President

Congressman Peter King (R-2) has visions of running for President in ’16:

“Most presidential candidates have reasons and rationales about why they are running … Peter King, the gruff congressman from Long Island, has an anti-vision.  He doesn’t so much want to be president as he wants to keep some of his Republican colleagues from being president … “My main thing first of all is to take advantage of the opportunity with my name being mentioned to get out and speak about issues I care about, and secondly to make sure that the Rand Paul and Ted Cruz types don’t take over the Republican Party.” …”

King is one of the last of the Rockefeller Republicans.  Running to the left of Governor Christie, he’d like the national GOP to be more like the New York GOP.  The fact that the state committee is a joke and has been on a downward spiral for decades precisely because it has been run by people like Pete should be enough to discredit him.

“… Some of the wounds of King’s image are surely self-inflicted … There was the time, in the wake of the shooting of Congressman Gabby Giffords, he proposed a bill that would have barred anyone from carrying firearms within 1,000 feet of an elected official (the rest of us, apparently, would be left to fend for ourselves.) …”

Because politicians are closer to God than the rest of us.  He’s been pushing gun control schemes for years:

“… In 2006 and 2008, the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence endorsed King on its website … King has been a vocal proponent of expanded background checks and has introduced stricter gun control measures, particularly in the wake of mass shootings …”

Fortunately I cannot see his campaign getting any traction.
