NRA had a press conference today to address the Newtown murders.
It sucked.
They should have spent a lot more time talking about mental health issues as opposed to arming school personnel. The culture wars crap, blaming video games and movies, reminded me of Tipper Gore and the PMRC attacking Twisted Sister in the 80s. Their rhetoric was not helpful for us in New York.
Wayne’s solution is three words, “qualified armed security”. What I’ve been saying for the past week is, “accurate return fire”. Seems we’re on the same page – qualified armed security produces accurate return fire.
Never mind the gun haters – they just want to ban guns, but what would rational people want to protect their kids? The absurdity of failed and discredited gun control, such as they foolishly relied on in Connecticut, or a well-trained, professional armed guard on site who can respond instantly and make a real difference?
I thought he had it exactly right. There is no other faster or more effective solution.
Armed school personnel, even though it was Bill Clinton’s idea, won’t fly here. Focusing on mental health not only moves the topic off gun control, but itself is a reoccurring subject in NYC when dealing with the homeless and/or crazies who push people in front of subway trains.
