CoBIS cost to manufacturers

NSSF rep. Jake McGuigan brought up an interesting fact at today’s Sportsmen’s Caucus’ breakfast: CoBIS was costing gun makers $7 per gun to ship compliant guns into New York with spent shell casings.  Over it’s 11 year lifetime that adds up to gun owners paying an extra $2.5 million dollars on top of the estimated $4 million taxpayer dollars spent each year to keep CoBIS up and running.  Total damage: approximately $47 million dollars wasted.

  1. A more interesting point is that COBIS is still law although budget has been pulled. NYSP still directing dealers to require casings. What is the legal status of COBIS?

  2. “NYSP still directing dealers to require casings.” (?)
If that’s happening, then CoBIS is still de facto in effect. The State Pogies need to stop enforcing it, then it’s no longer in effect.

  3. This is fair warning to the intellectually-challenged, like Michele Schimel, who told Ginny Simone that microstamping is “Blue Ray” to CoBIS’s “8-track”. Microstamping would effectively drive gun manufacturers out of New York State, and no gun manufacturer would spend the money to completely retool their production lines to suit buyers in one state. That means NO semiauto pistols for New Yorkers…if you don’t want a revolver, you can’t own a pistol. The cost of this moronic legislation wouldn’t be counted in tens of millions; it would be counted in hundreds of millions, thousands of lost jobs, and an exodus of good people who won’t live in a place with such garbage as Law of the Land.

  4. CoBIS is dead and gone. The State Police can not be telling anyone to ship the shell casing. The people that run the program are the ones who would be saying that and they all have new jobs or they are closing down the shop.

  6. Its not as if the police follow the law, or even care what the law is. Unless there are consequences for them, they will continue doing this.
