  1. They want this badly. What would they be willing to trade to get it?
NY certainly has enough laws that could be repealed in exchange.

  2. New York already has a program COBIS – (Combined Ballistic Identification System) in place since March of 2001, at an approximate cost to taxpayers of 4 million dollars a year. Since it’s inception, it has not helped to produce a single conviction.

Microstamping sounds good on the surface, but independent tests (One by the Suffolk County Police Department) conclude that the ability to make legible impressions is less than 50%. In addition, microstamping would apply to guns purchased legally. Criminals cannot buy guns legally. Mayor Bloomberg has repeatedly indicated that the majority of illegal guns come into NY from out-of-state, so this will have little impact on the guns that find their way into the hands of criminals. Finally, microstamping is easily defeated by filing down the die etched into the firing pin.

During a time of fiscal crisis, it is foolish to spend more money on unproven technology. Put the money to better use – such as keeping criminals in jail when they are involved in gun related crimes, instead of plea bargaining. End the “revolving door” that allows criminals back on the street.

  3. Schneiderman’s bill calls for microstamps in two places. They think one on the firing pin and another *in* the chamber.
