A reality check on running against Cuomo

Greg David’s op-ed, “Run against Cuomo? A reality check“, needs a good fisking:

“You will raise no money.  Mr. Cuomo’s war chest was bulging with about $30 million as of Aug. 1, and he maintains the ability to raise almost whatever sum he wants.  He will not only seek contributions, he will make it clear that anyone who gives to you will become an enemy …”

Yes, Cuomo has a lot of money and yes, he will think of anyone who donates to his opponent as an enemy, but there is no reason to think that Rob Astorino (or Ed Mangano) would not be able to raise a respectable amount of money if they run serious campaigns, something the NY GOP has not done recently for statewide races.

“… Mr. Cuomo has a real record and you really don’t.  Fundamentally, the governor has restrained state spending, cut taxes on the middle class, reformed Medicaid, stood by education reform, fought public-sector unions to curb retirement costs, won gun-control legislation and tamed one of the world’s worst legislatures …”

Fundamentally, taxes and spending are up under Cuomo.  The state budget is larger now than it was four years ago and the economic climate is worse.  Westchester’s budget is actually smaller now then when Astorino first took office.  Gun control has cost Cuomo at least 25 points off his approval rating and as for taming the state legislature, that is just laughable.

“… You have no winning issues to run on …”

See above, plus hyrofracking for upstate jobs and cheaper, cleaner energy for downstate.

“… Look at history …”

Partially true, given the low quality candidates the Republicans have run as of late.  The key is taking the race seriously.  If whomever gets the nomination looks like loser cannon-fodder they are doomed.

  1. If we can’t vote this idiot out of office “Run him out of town on a rail” ( “oh Brother were art thou”) he is the epitome of a sleazy politician who by my calculations owes every legal gun owner in the state an apology for tricky shit he pulled last December .

  2. This imbecile is another city progressive. He thinks Westchester is upstate, and that New York outside of New York Shitty doesn’t matter. This is why we need to get the vote out. EVERYONE UPSTATE MUST VOTE AND GET RID OF THIS IDIOT. It can be done; it was done when Mario was governor, now it’s time to show his spawn the door

  3. If the 4 million NY gun owners register and then actually vote, Cuomo can be defeated just like his NYC thug lawyer father was. However if the NY gun owners do as they have done in the past (come up with more excuses than a pregnant teenager why they don’t belong to NRA, SCOPE, NYSRPA and be registered to vote) then we have no hope whatsoever. More rights lost during the following 4 years and the lazy, complacent NY sportsman and gun owner to thank for it.

  4. The author is correct that incumbents tell people not to donate to their opponent, “or else”. Money is a concern…. Steve McLaughlin’s money bomb only raised about $33,000.

If 1/2 of the gun owners (2 million) sent in $20…. that would be a good start and the candidate wouldn’t have to worry about donors being threatened. Donations under $99 don’t have to be itemized.

If Steve’s money bomb had happened like that, he would be the front runner right now.

  5. Theres as many gun owners in NY as voted in the last election, 4.5 million gun owners, 4.5 voted out of 12 million registered. cuomo was elected with 2.9 million votes. If just HALF the states gun owners vote the gun issue we can put anyone in there we want. If we cant we are truly in a sad state of affairs.

  7. Problem is, “if we can get someone to run, walk the talk, and not change after being elected” that and getting everyone to vote! Too many times I have heard people complaining about the elections, only to find out that they did not vote STFU!

  8. Again it is up to each of us to get out and vote if you don’t vote you don’t have anything to bitch about they tell there bunch if you don’t vote you will get dropped from any help they get because if he gets booted out of office they won’t get there food stamps and free rent

  9. We have certainly met all the criteria for a despotism when officials in power can openly threaten, or even threaten by proxy as is being done here, those who oppose them. Even sadder that nobody is outraged and we have accepted it. Cuomo could be defeated. It is not impossible. But we would need a herculean effort by the cognisant (intelligent, conscious, thinking people, certainly all you great folks on this website, NRA, NYSRPA, etc.) to wake up the good but brain dead folks, take away their beer and their football for just one hour or so to vote just once in 4 years, as difficult as this may be. Think about this – Repubs have won in NYC (The shit palace of the commie world)! Just by the way, I have seen a bunch of them get much more conservative with the election of DiBlassio. Sure! They are scared shitless that the shit is comming right up to THEIR doorstep.

  10. I think this is the perfect time to show them that their money doesn’t matter when they decide to trample on our rights. To this day, alot of the talk that I here everyday is about how they stole our rights with the NYSafe Act. If all the people who really feel this way (or say they do) get off their ass and get out and vote, this clown won’t have a chance. In my view, one of the biggest problems is that there are way to many keyboard warriors out there. They sit and complain on all the social network sites until the time comes to actually do something about it. Then lo and behold, they never actually get off their ass to cast a vote. But you can bet that after the election, they will be the first ones on that keyboard to complain that so and so gets re-elected or so and so doesn’t get elected. Another problem is that the average voter has the attention span of a door knob. We need to make sure that the message is out there and stays out there, right up to and including Election Day.

  11. Terry Bernard – Does anyone know how many people actually knew about Steve’s money bomb?

  12. We need not only to get out and vote ourselves, but actively campaign and reach out to all the good but brain dead. Also, contribute if you can.
