The end of CoBIS

The legislature just passed budget bill A-9055D/S-6255D which includes abolishing CoBIS.  I expect Governor Cuomo will sign the bill shortly and it will go into effect immediately.

This is a big win for the home team.  I cannot recall when (if ever) New York ever scrapped one of its gun control laws before.

  1. I’m more interested to see if the price of firearms will go down now. As of a few years ago, the estimated increase on a firearm due to CoBIS was $200 and at that time there were 48 nationwide manufacturers complying. they’ve also spent about $45,000,000 + on this program and have +/- 2 hits since started in 2001. That’s a lot of time to realize the idea isn’t working!

  2. For those of us not in the know, what is the practical effect of the end of COBIS?

    What did it entail and what will gun buying in NY look like now?

    Existing records destroyed? What else?

    Thanks. =)

  3. CoBIS wasted several million taxpayer dollars each year to administer. The State Police can now redirect these funds to something useful.

    Manufactures won’t have to ship spent shell cases with guns so pistols might get a little less expensive. People won’t have to drive to one of the few places in the state to get their pistols tested if they were sold without shell casings so there is less aggravation.

    As to existing records, I don’t know what will become of them.
