Spending resources wisely

Being effective in politics means spending resources, time, effort and money, wisely.

This does not tick off any of those boxes:

“… Second Amendment supporters will host their own rally in Albany this coming Saturday April 14 from 2 to 6 p.m. at Empire State Plaza. The event is part of the nationwide “Americans for America: National 2nd Amendment Rights Rally,” said Garry Hoffman, director of law enforcement relations at Gun Owners of America: New York, a pro-Second Amendment organization …”

This is doomed to failure from the get-go.  I know this because the legislature is not in session on the weekends and none of them are going to see it.  Out of sight, out of mind.

What rally organizers fail to grasp is that all the legislators care about is themselves and anyone who can help or hurt them at election time.  Does holding a rally outside empty office buildings help or hinder someone’s election plans?  No.

Instead of wasting effort on this nonsense, here is an alternative: Hold a fundraiser for a pro-gun candidate and charge the price of a box or two of ammo as admission.

For example, Claudia Tenney has been outspoken in her support of 2A in Congress and she is in a tough re-election campaign against Anthony Brindisi who has been endorsed by the Giffords gun control group.  Helping her out with a shoot or BBQ would go a lot farther in support of 2A than holding up signs on a stick outside the CAP/LOB that nobody is going to see.

  1. I was at the march. It made the news. I estimated 300 to 400 people were there. The WNYT news said “dozens”. I understand why your opinion would be that the April 14th march was a waste of resources because the march was held on a weekend and the legislators were not in, but I don’t agree with your opinion (well not totally). I don’t think the point of the march was explicitly to alert legislators. The point of the march in my opinion was: 1) for public perception that we are unified, 2) to unite groups, 3) to make contacts with others that may normally not communicate with each other, and 4) we WANTED to do it. It showed the public that we are here and vocal. I have been discouraged by all the anti-second amendment news coverage and legislation and this march added some enthusiasm to my depleted reserves. Now we need to get your great idea for a fundraiser and get it into motion. By the way, I love this web site. It has fantastic New York second amendment news. Please keep up the good work.

  2. Unity is not synonymous with effectiveness.

Did you receive a phone call this morning from CAP/LOB asking your opinion on some bill under consideration? If not, you know what they think about that rally.
