{"id":9985,"date":"2014-03-20T15:28:21","date_gmt":"2014-03-20T19:28:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=9985"},"modified":"2014-03-24T08:29:24","modified_gmt":"2014-03-24T12:29:24","slug":"more-pandering-to-the-fudds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=9985","title":{"rendered":"More pandering to the Fudds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As expected <a href=\"http:\/\/www.governor.ny.gov\" target=\"_blank\">Governor Cuomo<\/a>\u00a0is pandering to the Fudds in an attempt to win back some votes he lost with the SAFE Act. \u00a0He&#8217;s got <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dec.ny.gov\" target=\"_blank\">DEC Commission Joe Martens<\/a> going around around the state <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.syracuse.com\/outdoors\/2014\/03\/dec_commissioner_martens_to_meet_behind_closed_doors_with_central_ny_sportsmen.html\" target=\"_blank\">telling a bunch of B.S.<\/a> to sportsmen:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;Joe Martens, commissioner of the state Department of Environmental Conservation, is scheduled to meet with a select group of outdoors sportsmen behind closed doors Friday afternoon at the DEC Region 7 office in Cortland. \u00a0The meeting is closed to the press, a DEC spokesman said. \u00a0The reason for the meeting, scheduled from noon to 2 p.m., is to get feedback on a range of outdoor-related issues put out by Gov. Andrew Cuomo, including changes to the hunting, fishing and trapping licenses; the adventure license proposal and items in Cuomo&#8217;s executive budget for the coming year, including making crossbows legal for hunting &#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>What possible reason is there not to have the media invited? \u00a0The head of a state agency is looking for public input on the Governor&#8217;s budget. \u00a0Isn&#8217;t this newsworthy?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230; A representative from the State Police is expected to accompany Martens to address any SAFE Act-related questions. \u00a0&#8220;It&#8217;s always a hot button issue when we&#8217;re talking to folks,&#8221; said Christian Ballantyne, a special assistant at the DEC who helped contacted sportsmen about attending Friday&#8217;s get-together &#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This is why they don&#8217;t want the press around. \u00a0They are guaranteed negative feedback because of SAFE and don&#8217;t want the media to cover it.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230; \u00a0Ballantyne said he expects about a half dozen sportsmen representatives to attend Friday. He many of those invited were from a list of names recommended by the DEC&#8217;s fish and wildlife staff at the Cortland office &#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Known Fudds or other losers who aren&#8217;t likely to ask tough questions or expect serious answers.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230; Chuck Parker, of Mexico, who is president of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nyscc.com\" target=\"_blank\">New York State Conservation Council<\/a>, was among those invited but had to decline because he is attending a meeting of the state <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dec.ny.gov\/about\/564.html\" target=\"_blank\">Fish and Wildlife Advisory Board<\/a> today and Friday up at the DEC training facility in Pulaski &#8230;&#8221;\u00a0<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Case in point.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230; He said when it came to the SAFE Act, Parker said that Martens said he didn&#8217;t feel it had a significant impact on sportsmen. \u00a0&#8220;We countered that yes it does,&#8221; Parker said &#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And what are you going to do about it? \u00a0NYSCC has done nothing about SAFE.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230; Following that Albany meeting, Parker said he knows of meetings Martens has held with sportsmen at DEC regional offices in Region 9 (near Buffalo); Region 8 (near Rochester) and Region 3 in New Paltz. \u00a0All were put together with little advance notice, he said, and to his knowledge there were no problems &#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I know someone who went to the R3 meeting. \u00a0There were no &#8220;problems&#8221;
