{"id":9689,"date":"2014-01-25T12:40:57","date_gmt":"2014-01-25T17:40:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=9689"},"modified":"2014-01-25T14:45:12","modified_gmt":"2014-01-25T19:45:12","slug":"bread-and-circuses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=9689","title":{"rendered":"Bread and Circuses"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.governor.ny.gov\" target=\"_blank\">Governor<\/a> is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.timesunion.com\/local\/article\/Cuomo-budget-proposal-focusing-on-gun-violence-5167005.php\" target=\"_blank\">trying to buy off urban voters<\/a> with another slush fund:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230; Operation IMPACT, which since 2004 has sent more than $20 million to Albany, Schenectady and Rensselaer counties to make police more data-driven and nimble, has been replaced in Gov. Andrew Cuomo&#8217;s proposed 2014-15 budget with a $15.2 million program focused more intensely on the most violent crimes. \u00a0Rather than an abandonment of IMPACT, which debuted in Albany&#8217;s then-crime-ridden Park South in 2004, Cuomo administration officials are billing the new Gun-Involved Violence Elimination initiative as an expansion of the earlier program &#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This is just <a href=\"http:\/\/www.news10.com\/story\/21648057\/snug-volunteers-hold-rally-in-albany\" target=\"_blank\">SNUG<\/a> by another name. \u00a0The publicly stated idea behind SNUG was spreading money around in high crime areas ostensibly to teach young people that shooting each other is bad. \u00a0In Albany, <a href=\"http:\/\/albany.wnyt.com\/news\/community-spirit\/135066-albany-fights-back-against-gun-violence\" target=\"_blank\">some it went for block parties<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230; Albany SNUG volunteer Vivian Kornegay says the violence around the Capital Region is heartbreaking. \u00a0That&#8217;s why she organized a block party with music, food and dancing in Albany&#8217;s South End &#8230; \u00a0Kornegay, the mother of a shooting victim herself, says there have been similar events in the past. \u00a0But she says part of the difference here, is that Saturday&#8217;s event is more than just a party. \u00a0She says not only will they be having block parties, they will be out canvassing the neighborhood and engaging the community in order to bring an end to the violence\u00a0&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And how well <a href=\"http:\/\/colonie.wnyt.com\/news\/news\/150002-son-snug-volunteer-shot-albany\" target=\"_blank\">did this strategy work<\/a>?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230; The son of a woman who has been fighting against gun violence in Albany, was shot Tuesday.
