Both defeats were painful for Democrats \u2013 Mr. Morse\u2019s because he had been Senate president, and Ms. Giron\u2019s because she represented a heavily Democratic, working-class slice of southern Colorado &#8230;  As money and national attention poured into Colorado &#8230; the races became a symbol of the nation\u2019s bitter fight over gun control, with one side bolstered by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mayorsagainstillegalguns.org\" target=\"_blank\">Mayor Michael R.
