{"id":8304,"date":"2013-05-01T12:31:37","date_gmt":"2013-05-01T16:31:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=8304"},"modified":"2013-05-01T12:31:37","modified_gmt":"2013-05-01T16:31:37","slug":"hollywood-gun-fight","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=8304","title":{"rendered":"Hollywood gun fight"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/05\/02\/nyregion\/studios-fret-that-new-yorks-gun-laws-could-hamper-film-production.html\" target=\"_blank\">Hollywood is concerned<\/a> that there is no exemption in the SAFE Act for them:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230;\u00a0Officials in the movie and television industry say the new laws could prevent them from using the lifelike assault weapons and high-capacity magazines that they have employed in shows like \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0203259\/\" target=\"_blank\">Law &amp; Order: Special Victims Unit<\/a>\u201d and films like \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt1345836\" target=\"_blank\">The Dark Knight Rises<\/a>.\u201d &#8230; \u00a0Industry workers say that they need to use real weapons for verisimilitude, that it would be impractical to try to manufacture fake weapons that could fire blanks, and that the entertainment industry should not be penalized accidentally by a law intended as a response to mass shootings. \u00a0\u201cWeapons are part of our history as a culture as humans,\u201d said Ryder Washburn, vice president of <a href=\"http:\/\/thespecialistsltd.com\" target=\"_blank\">the Specialists<\/a>, a leading supplier of firearms for productions that is based in Manhattan. \u201cTo tell stories, you need them.\u201d &#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Que the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sadtrombone.com\" target=\"_blank\">Sad Trombone<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230;\u00a0Gun rights activists, who are challenging the new firearm restrictions in court, have mocked the idea of a so-called Hollywood exception. &#8220;They&#8217;re saying, &#8216;Why are we being held to this standard when Hollywood is getting a pass, and they&#8217;re the ones who are promoting the violence?&#8217; &#8221; said <a href=\"mailto:tking@nysrpa.org\" target=\"_blank\">Thomas H. King<\/a>, the president of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nysrpa.org\" target=\"_blank\">New York State Rifle and Pistol Association<\/a> &#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Exactly.<\/p>\n<p>Some Republicans have <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.buffalonews.com\/politics_now\/2013\/03\/skelos-hollywood-exemption-to-gun-law-is-wrong.html\" target=\"_blank\">come out against<\/a> an exemption:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230; &#8220;My concern is why are you doing for Hollywood and others cannot do the same thing?&#8221; \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nysenate.gov\/senator\/dean-g-skelos\" target=\"_blank\">Skelo<\/a>s said in an interview today. \u00a0&#8220;I don&#8217;t believe they should be treated any differently.&#8221; &#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Others are attacking the Governor:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nyracc.org\" target=\"_blank\">Assembly Republicans<\/a> on Tuesday urged the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nysdacc.org\" target=\"_blank\">Democratic majority<\/a> to reduce the $425 million in tax breaks for film productions and restore a $90 million cut to the state <a href=\"http:\/\/www.opwdd.ny.gov\" target=\"_blank\">Office of People with Developmental Disabilities<\/a> &#8230; \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.assembly.state.ny.us\/mem\/Bill-Nojay\" target=\"_blank\">Assemblyman Bill Nojay, R-Pittsford<\/a>, Monroe County, accused <a href=\"http:\/\/www.governor.ny.gov\" target=\"_blank\">Cuomo<\/a> of pandering to the film industry in exchange for campaign contributions &#8230;\u00a0Nojay said the state is giving $5 million for next year\u2019s Super Bowl in New Jersey and spending $30 million to enforce the gun-control law, which Republicans have opposed &#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>True, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/andrew-cuomo-re-election-hollywood-prop-8-264775\" target=\"_blank\">Cuomo has been sucking up<\/a> to Hollywood:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230;\u00a0The governor &#8212; still fresh from his victory securing marriage equality in New York &#8212; will arrive on December 2 for a reception and dinner co-hosted by Hollywood reliables Rob and Michele Reiner, Steve Bing, Katie McGrath and J.J. Abrams, Candy Spelling, Darren Star, Chris Albrecht, Kevin Huvane, and Laura and Casey Wasserman, among others &#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If he was really concerned about &#8220;gun violence&#8221;
