{"id":8000,"date":"2013-04-04T14:14:54","date_gmt":"2013-04-04T18:14:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=8000"},"modified":"2013-04-04T14:14:54","modified_gmt":"2013-04-04T18:14:54","slug":"tone-deaf-nra","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=8000","title":{"rendered":"Tone deaf NRA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nra.org\" target=\"_blank\">NRA<\/a> released their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2013\/04\/02\/nra-school-security-hutchinson\/2045565\/\" target=\"_blank\">recommendations on school safety<\/a> this week.<\/p>\n<p>Had they simply said schools should have the option of hiring armed guards\/police it there would not have been an issue. \u00a0Many schools and colleges do have armed security so it&#8217;s not a big deal. \u00a0They could have said so-called <em>gun free school zones<\/em>\u00a0should be abolished. \u00a0Much like <em>drug free school zones<\/em> they&#8217;re feel good nonsense that do nothing to enhance student safety and a rational argument can be made against them.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately NRA went another direction with their report:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230;\u00a0One &#8220;model training program&#8221; would include a background check for school staffers who want to carry a firearm as well as <strong>40-60 hours in training<\/strong>, former representative <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Asa_Hutchinson\" target=\"_blank\">Asa Hutchinson<\/a>, director of the project, said during a press conference at the <a href=\"http:\/\/press.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">National Press Club<\/a>. \u00a0While the NRA initially advocated for former police officers to volunteer to guard schools, <\/em><em>Hutchinson<\/em><em> said the NRA&#8217;s research caused the group to back off that approach. \u00a0&#8220;In terms of volunteers, my impression of school superintendents is they would have great reluctance and so it&#8217;s not the best solution,&#8221; Hutchinson said. &#8220;That&#8217;s why we have shifted to school staff, trained school staff, that&#8217;s designated by the superintendent of the school board.&#8221; &#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>NRA is often unfairly <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/editorial\/2012\/12\/22\/tone-deaf-nra-calls-for-armed-schools\/yExkQvVkiT9YcTuPHOZo0I\/story.html\" target=\"_blank\">accused of being tone deaf by opponents<\/a>. \u00a0This is not one of those times.<\/p>\n<p>This is an astoundingly stupid idea. \u00a0How anyone could think they could sell this idea to the general public is beyond me.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ssb_list_wrapper\"><li class=\"fb2\" style=\"width:135px\"><iframe src=\"\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/like.php?href=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.gunpoliticsny.com%2F%3Fp%3D8000&amp;layout=button_count&amp;action=like&amp;show_faces=false&amp;share=true&amp;width=135&amp;height=21&amp;appId=307091639398582\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"border:none; overflow:hidden;  width:150px; height:21px;\" allowTransparency=\"true\"><\/iframe><\/li><li class=\"twtr\" style=\"width:90px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/share\" class=\"twitter-share-button\" data-url=\"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=8000\">&nbsp;<\/a><script>!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0],p=\/^http:\/.test(d.location)?'http':'https';if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=p+':\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js';fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document, 'script', 'twitter-wjs');<\/script><\/li><li class=\"gplus\" style=\"width:68px\"><div class=\"g-plusone\" data-size=\"medium\" data-href=\"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=8000\"><\/div><\/li><li class=\"ssb_linkedin\" style=\"width:64px\"><script src=\"\/\/platform.linkedin.com\/in.js\" type=\"text\/javascript\">lang: en_US<\/script><script type=\"IN\/Share\" data-url=\"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=8000\" data-counter=\"right\"><\/script><\/li><\/ul>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NRA released their recommendations on school safety this week.
