{"id":7914,"date":"2013-03-29T08:46:16","date_gmt":"2013-03-29T12:46:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=7914"},"modified":"2013-03-29T08:46:16","modified_gmt":"2013-03-29T12:46:16","slug":"tweaking-safe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=7914","title":{"rendered":"Tweaking SAFE"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The legislature has &#8220;tweaked&#8221; the SAFE Act.<\/p>\n<p>Since nobody makes 7 round magazines, the legislature is going to allow the sale of 10 rounders, but you can only put 7 rounds in them, except when you&#8217;re at a range target shooting and then you can load all 10. \u00a0 The brilliance of this move was <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.timesunion.com\/capitol\/archives\/183613\/assembly-after-dark-jousting-over-safe-act\/\" target=\"_blank\">a topic of discussion<\/a> yesterday during budget debates:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230; the tweaks to the SAFE Act prompted some of the sharpest exchanges, beginning with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.assembly.state.ny.us\/mem\/Steven-F-McLaughlin\" target=\"_blank\">Republican Steve McLaughlin<\/a> fencing with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.assembly.state.ny.us\/mem\/Joseph-R-Lentol\" target=\"_blank\">Joe Lentol<\/a>, who had defended the gun control law in the chamber when it was passed in January. \u00a0McLaughlin scoffed at the idea that the law allows 10 rounds in a magazine at a pistol range but not at home. \u00a0\u201cI can practice defending my family with 10 rounds \u2026 but I can actually defend my family for real with seven rounds?,\u201d he asked &#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Exactly.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230; Lentol noted that his brother, an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nra.org\" target=\"_blank\">NRA<\/a> member, was able to quickly replace empty magazines in his weapon, and suggested that anyone who worries about a lack of firepower might want to think about getting more guns &#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If his brother is able to quickly switch out magazines, then what would stop a violent criminal from doing the same thing? \u00a0He&#8217;s basically admitted magazine limits are BS.<\/p>\n<p>And what is with the suggestion about buying more guns? \u00a0Instead of buying one gun with a 15 round magazine, you should buy two guns with 7 round magazines?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230; \u201cThe lunacy of this thing has unraveled before our eyes,\u201d McLaughlin said of the SAFE Act &#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Yes, and it&#8217;s not over yet.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230; Lentol said that scores of bills had been passed by the chamber with the speed allowed by a message of necessity, which waives the three-day aging period for legislation.
