{"id":6592,"date":"2012-08-27T16:56:25","date_gmt":"2012-08-27T20:56:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=6592"},"modified":"2012-08-27T16:56:25","modified_gmt":"2012-08-27T20:56:25","slug":"pandering-for-the-gun-vote","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=6592","title":{"rendered":"Pandering for the gun vote"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Republicans are clearly <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/gop-set-to-ok-most-pro-gun-platform-ever\/article\/2506043#.UDvYUGyoF8G\" target=\"_blank\">pandering for the gun vote<\/a> this election:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;Delegates to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gop.org\" target=\"_blank\">Republican National Convention<\/a> on Tuesday will approve the most pro-gun platform ever, staking out support for national concealed carry reciprocity and opposing domestic restrictions on ammunition and United Nations interference in gun sales &#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>David Keane mentioned this when he was on <a href=\"http:\/\/nra.cms.brandednews.com\/assets\/podcasts\/08_24_12_The_Daily_News.mp3\" target=\"_blank\">NRANews last Friday<\/a>. \u00a0While I don&#8217;t doubt that <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">some<\/span> of these feelings are genuine, this has to be an attempt to shore up the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=6583\">lukewarm feelings<\/a> gun owners have for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mittromney.com\" target=\"_blank\">Mitt Romney<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230; Leading the changes from prior GOP platforms was a sentence backing the use of deadly force for self-defense &#8230; &#8220;We acknowledge, support and defend law-abiding citizens&#8217; God-given right of self-defense.&#8221; Also added was language opposing restrictions on ammo purchases and supporting the right of those with state-issued concealed carry permits to cross state lines. In the section calling on Americans to handle guns safely, the GOP platform adds: &#8220;this also includes the right to obtain and store ammunition without registration. We support the fundamental right to self-defense wherever a law-abiding citizen has a legal right to be, and we support federal legislation that would expand the exercise of that right by allowing those with state-issued carry permits to carry firearms in any state that issues such permits to its own residents.&#8221; &#8230; \u00a0&#8220;We oppose legislation that is intended to restrict our <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Second_Amendment_to_the_United_States_Constitution\" target=\"_blank\">Second Amendment<\/a> rights by limiting the capacity of clips or magazines, or otherwise revising the ill-considered <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Federal_Assault_Weapons_Ban\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Clinton gun ban.<\/em><\/a><em>&#8221;
