{"id":6402,"date":"2012-07-16T10:49:22","date_gmt":"2012-07-16T14:49:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=6402"},"modified":"2012-07-16T10:49:22","modified_gmt":"2012-07-16T14:49:22","slug":"schimels-press-conference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=6402","title":{"rendered":"Schimel&#8217;s press conference"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.assembly.state.ny.us\/mem\/Michelle-Schimel\" target=\"_blank\">Michelle Schimel<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nysenate.gov\/senator\/jose-peralta\" target=\"_blank\">Jose Peralta<\/a> are going to have a press conference this afternoon. \u00a0They are hoping to get some political mileage out of the <a href=\"http:\/\/nymag.com\/daily\/intel\/2012\/07\/bloomberg-emanuel-fight-new-york-city-chicago-shootings.html\" target=\"_blank\">recent bunch of shootings<\/a> as a way to push microstamping. \u00a0That&#8217;s not likely to happen for no other reason than the state legislature is in recess and is not going to come back just to deal with her pet issue.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/mayor\" target=\"_blank\">Mayor Mike<\/a> is busy <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dnainfo.com\/new-york\/20120716\/jamaica\/mayor-bloomberg-says-nyclu-no-better-than-nra\" target=\"_blank\">bashing the NYCLU<\/a> for opposing the over the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/07\/11\/nyregion\/courts-putting-stop-and-frisk-policy-on-trial.html\" target=\"_blank\">NYPD&#8217;s stop-and-frisk policy<\/a> which <a href=\"http:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/ny-appeals-court-vacates-another-stop-frisk-conviction-215018205.html\" target=\"_blank\">the courts don&#8217;t like<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230; \u201cLet\u2019s be clear: the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nyclu.org\" target=\"_blank\">NYCLU\u2019s<\/a> priority is not protecting our safety. It is protecting their ideology,&#8221; he said. &#8220;And in that regard, they are no better than the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nra.org\" target=\"_blank\">NRA<\/a>. &#8220;One group views the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Second_Amendment_to_the_United_States_Constitution\" target=\"_blank\">Second Amendment<\/a> in absolutist terms; the other group views the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fourth_Amendment_to_the_United_States_Constitution\" target=\"_blank\">Fourth Amendment<\/a> in absolutist terms. Both groups, I think, are dangerously wrong on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.house.gov\/house\/Constitution\/Constitution.html\" target=\"_blank\">Constitution<\/a>,\u201d he added. &#8220;The right to bear arms and the right to privacy do not trump the right of citizens to walk down their own street, or walk down their own hallway, without getting blown away.&#8221; &#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>There&#8217;s that damn Constitution getting in the way again.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, these people have been pretty quiet about the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.silive.com\/news\/index.ssf\/2011\/10\/5_islanders_nabbed_in_gun-runn.html\" target=\"_blank\">NYPD officers running illegal gun smuggling operation<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/new-york\/manhattan-sold-nypd-guns-support-drug-habit-prosecutors-article-1.1114064\" target=\"_blank\">drug addict who stole guns to pay off his pusher<\/a>. \u00a0That&#8217;s not part of the antigun narrative.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ssb_list_wrapper\"><li class=\"fb2\" style=\"width:135px\"><iframe src=\"\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/like.php?href=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.gunpoliticsny.com%2F%3Fp%3D6402&amp;layout=button_count&amp;action=like&amp;show_faces=false&amp;share=true&amp;width=135&amp;height=21&amp;appId=307091639398582\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"border:none;
