{"id":5887,"date":"2012-04-09T10:07:30","date_gmt":"2012-04-09T14:07:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=5887"},"modified":"2012-04-09T10:07:30","modified_gmt":"2012-04-09T14:07:30","slug":"congress-isnt-listening-to-bloomberg","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=5887","title":{"rendered":"Congress isn&#8217;t listening to Bloomberg"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Once again, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/mayor\" target=\"_blank\">Mayor Bloomberg<\/a> is trying to make political hay out of some police shootings in order to advance his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fixgunchecks.org\" target=\"_blank\">private sale prohibition<\/a> bill and the Daily News is happy to assist with two stories: &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/new-york\/washington-stop-cowering-gun-lobby-article-1.1058391\" target=\"_blank\">Mayor Bloomberg: Washington needs to stop cowering before the gun lobby<\/a>&#8221; and &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/new-york\/police-commissioner-ray-kelly-fights-good-fight-york-city-long-war-guns-article-1.1058404\" target=\"_blank\">Police Commissioner Ray Kelly fights the good fight in New York City&#8217;s long war against guns<\/a>&#8220;:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230;\u00a0Every one of the criminals who has shot at our police officers possessed his gun illegally. Every one. \u00a0And make no mistake: It will happen again \u2014 and again \u2014 until those in Washington stop cowering before the gun lobby. \u00a0Across the country, more than 80% of gun owners support simple fixes to the background check system that would help stop the flow of guns to criminals. \u00a0The ideologues who run the gun lobby don\u2019t want us to know that, but it\u2019s true. \u00a0Americans of both parties support common-sense steps that would save lives and protect our police. \u00a0But the gun lobby doesn\u2019t, and it has scared Washington silent &#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Not true. \u00a0Congress is working on the issue in the form of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nraila.org\/legislation\/federal-legislation\/2012\/respecting-states'-rights-and-concealed-carry-reciprocity-act-introduced-in-us-senate.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">national reciprocity bill<\/a>. \u00a0Mayor Mike is just upset they&#8217;re not even paying lip service to his agenda. \u00a0And why should they? \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mayorsagainstillegalguns.org\" target=\"_blank\">MAIG<\/a> and the rest of the gun control groups are largely just astroturf and Congress knows that.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230; \u201cThere is no easy solution to this problem,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Raymond_Kelly\" target=\"_blank\">[Police Commissioner Raymond] Kelly<\/a> said Sunday, \u201cabsent a comprehensive anti-gun strategy throughout the country, as opposed to a pro-gun strategy. \u00a0In New York, we have every law we need on the books. \u00a0The problem isn\u2019t this state, it\u2019s all the other ones.\u201d &#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If gun laws in other states are the problem, then why don&#8217;t those other states have similar problems to New York City? \u00a0If criminals have &#8220;easy&#8221;
