{"id":5341,"date":"2012-01-03T14:00:29","date_gmt":"2012-01-03T19:00:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=5341"},"modified":"2012-01-03T14:00:29","modified_gmt":"2012-01-03T19:00:29","slug":"another-martyr","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=5341","title":{"rendered":"Another martyr"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Headline from the Post says it all, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nypost.com\/p\/news\/local\/manhattan\/nd_dubious_gun_carry_bust_LCJSSwttktOIQDhlsOmrUM\" target=\"_blank\">2nd dubious gun-carry bust<\/a>&#8220;:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;A jeweler from Indiana who came to New York on business got busted trying to check his licensed handgun at the Empire State Building, the latest example of prosecutors taking a hard-line stance against tourists who pack heat. \u00a0Ryan Jerome, 28, a former Marine tail gunner, is facing 3 1\/2 years in jail as <a href=\"http:\/\/manhattanda.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance<\/a> pursues felony weapons charges &#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/mayor\" target=\"_blank\">Bloomberg<\/a> has to be pushing for prosecution. \u00a0If he called up Vance&#8217;s office and asked him to go easy on the guy he would.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230; Jerome\u2019s Sept. 27 arrest came during Jerome\u2019s first visit to the Big Apple, where he arrived with $15,000 worth of gold that he was selling to a refinery on Long Island. \u00a0Jerome said he needs the gun for his business, and that he has a concealed-weapon permit from his home state &#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He couldn&#8217;t sell it in his home state? \u00a0I see commercials all the time advertising selling unwanted metals and jewelry.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230; \u201cI always check the gun laws. \u00a0I assumed I was good to go.\u201d \u00a0He and his girlfriend planned to make the sale and return immediately, but because gold prices had plummeted, they decided to stay a few days &#8212; hoping to wait out a price rebound. \u00a0The safe at their midtown hotel was full, so \u201cwe had to carry the gold around wherever we went,\u201d he said &#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Gun or not, I would not carry that much gold around NYC. \u00a0I know it&#8217;s only 9-10 oz. or so, but still.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230; To pass the time they visited the Empire State Building. Jerome says he informed a ticket seller about his gun and was told to go to the building\u2019s security office and check his weapon, a .45 Ruger. \u00a0Security called the cops, who promptly charged Jerome with weapon possession &#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Opps.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230; Jerome spent two days locked up at 100 Centre Street before getting out on bail and returning home &#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He didn&#8217;t deserve that.<\/p>\n<p>All this is going to accomplish is helping to push <a href=\"http:\/\/thomas.loc.gov\" target=\"_blank\">H.R. 822<\/a> through the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.senate.gov\" target=\"_blank\">Senate<\/a>. \u00a0Bloomberg, and by extension <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mayorsagainstillegalguns.org\" target=\"_blank\">MAIG<\/a>, are hurting their own agenda by screwing over otherwise decent citizens like this guy.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ssb_list_wrapper\"><li class=\"fb2\" style=\"width:135px\"><iframe src=\"\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/like.php?href=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.gunpoliticsny.com%2F%3Fp%3D5341&amp;layout=button_count&amp;action=like&amp;show_faces=false&amp;share=true&amp;width=135&amp;height=21&amp;appId=307091639398582\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"border:none;
