{"id":5314,"date":"2011-12-29T13:48:21","date_gmt":"2011-12-29T18:48:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=5314"},"modified":"2011-12-30T07:30:56","modified_gmt":"2011-12-30T12:30:56","slug":"the-perfect-martyr","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=5314","title":{"rendered":"The perfect martyr"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From the Post, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nypost.com\/p\/news\/local\/manhattan\/pistol_whipped_at_wtc_1x32hgT52UNhxkP36ZYAgJ\" target=\"_blank\">Tennessee tourist arrested for bringing pistol into 9\/11 Memorial<\/a>&#8220;:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230; A tourist from Tennessee waltzed into one of the most secure sites in the city \u2014 and politely asked a cop if she could check her weapon. \u00a0Instead, she was dragged out in cuffs. \u00a0Now, Meredith Graves, 39, is facing at least three years in prison for thinking <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sullivan_Act\" target=\"_blank\">New York\u2019s gun laws<\/a> are anything like those in the Bible Belt &#8230; Graves, who has a full legal carry permit in Tennessee, was locked up on a weapons-possession charge and held on $2,000 bond that she posted yesterday &#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>She should have checked out local gun laws before bringing her roscoe into the state. \u00a0There&#8217;s really no excuse for that. \u00a0It is also a good idea for visitors to the Empire State to understand how local residents view them:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"New Yorker's Map of America\" src=\"\/images\/nyersmapofamerica.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"604\" height=\"573\" \/><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230; The <a href=\"http:\/\/manhattanda.org\" target=\"_blank\">Manhattan DA\u2019s Office<\/a> is pursuing a conviction on felony gun possession \u2014 carrying a minimum sentence of 3 1\/2 years &#8230; <\/em>Sources don\u2019t believe Graves\u2019 intentions were sinister &#8230;&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>They obviously weren&#8217;t which makes Cy Vance&#8217;s efforts to go for a felony conviction all the more outrageous. \u00a0Outrageous, but not unexpected given he&#8217;s tight with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nyagv.org\" target=\"_blank\">NYAGV<\/a>. \u00a0Here is a picture of him speaking at their &#8217;10 fundraiser:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Manhattan D.A. Cy Vance at NYAGV 2010 fundraiser\" src=\"\/images\/cyvance-nyagv2010.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"525\" height=\"350\" \/><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230; \u201cYou\u2019d think states would reciprocate with the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Second_Amendment_to_the_United_States_Constitution\" target=\"_blank\">Second Amendment<\/a>. \u00a0She has a license to carry in Tennessee,\u201d said her mother-in-law, who lives in Manchester, NJ &#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Being from New Jersey, the mother-in-law should know better than to say that.<\/p>\n<p>What <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/mayor\" target=\"_blank\">Bloomberg<\/a> and Vance have created is the perfect martyr and posterchild for <a href=\"http:\/\/thomas.loc.gov\" target=\"_blank\">H.R. 822<\/a>. \u00a0Hopefully this case will help push it through the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.senate.gov\" target=\"_blank\">Senate<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nypost.com\/p\/news\/local\/hold_your_fire_4dW6vKJHy3GFawLPw5riDM\" target=\"_blank\">UPDATE<\/a>:<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/council.nyc.gov\/d22\/html\/members\/home.shtml\" target=\"_blank\">Peter Valone<\/a> gets it:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230; \u201cBy prosecuting this woman and seeking 3 1\/2 years of jail, we are shooting our own [gun-control] efforts in the foot and giving the rest of the country ammunition,\u201d Vallone said &#8230; Vallone cited a recently passed House bill that would allow people to carry registered guns between all states regardless of local laws. \u00a0 \u201cClearly, the laws are too strict here, but that\u2019s something we need to work out for ourselves without honoring licenses to carry guns in states where felons can carry them,\u201d he said &#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<ul class=\"ssb_list_wrapper\"><li class=\"fb2\" style=\"width:135px\"><iframe src=\"\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/like.php?href=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.gunpoliticsny.com%2F%3Fp%3D5314&amp;layout=button_count&amp;action=like&amp;show_faces=false&amp;share=true&amp;width=135&amp;height=21&amp;appId=307091639398582\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"border:none;
