{"id":3620,"date":"2011-03-15T11:50:55","date_gmt":"2011-03-15T15:50:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=3620"},"modified":"2011-03-15T11:50:55","modified_gmt":"2011-03-15T15:50:55","slug":"response-to-obama","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=3620","title":{"rendered":"Response to Obama"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nra.org\" target=\"_blank\">NRA<\/a> is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/stories\/0311\/51313.html\" target=\"_blank\">blowing off Obama&#8217;s request to work together<\/a> for more gun control:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230; \u201cWhy should I or the NRA go sit down with a group of people that have spent a lifetime trying to destroy the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Second_Amendment_to_the_United_States_Constitution\" target=\"_blank\">Second Amendment<\/a> in the United States?\u201d said Wayne LaPierre &#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>True, it&#8217;s not likely anything positive would come out of such a meeting. \u00a0USA Today also <a href=\"http:\/\/content.usatoday.com\/communities\/theoval\/post\/2011\/03\/obama-holds-gun-law-meetings-without-the-nra\/1\" target=\"_blank\">notes<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230; Given its political and financial strength, the NRA is probably in a position to block any new gun legislation, especially in the Republican-run <a href=\"http:\/\/www.house.gov\" target=\"_blank\">House<\/a> &#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Yes, but it goes deeper than that according to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rasmussenreports.com\/public_content\/politics\/obama_administration\/daily_presidential_tracking_poll\" target=\"_blank\">latest polling<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230; Overall, 43% of voters say they at least somewhat approve of the president&#8217;s performance. <strong>Fifty-seven percent (57%) disapprove<\/strong> &#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Obama isn&#8217;t acting from a position of strength either in Congress or with <a href=\"http:\/\/townhall.com\/columnists\/bradoleary\/2011\/03\/01\/poll_shows_voters_of_all_stripes_oppose_more_gun_control\" target=\"_blank\">the public which doesn&#8217;t want more gun control<\/a> either:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230; Voters were asked: \u201cPlease tell us if gun laws in America are adequate, too harsh, or too lenient for law-abiding citizens.\u201d \u00a0 An overwhelming 75% of voters think that gun laws are either adequate or too harsh for law-abiding citizens (33% think gun laws are too harsh). Also, <strong>57% of Democratic voters consider gun laws to be adequate or too harsh<\/strong>, and only 36% think they\u2019re too lenient &#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He doesn&#8217;t even have the support of his Democrat base on the issue.<\/p>\n<p>Bottom line: gun control is going nowhere in this Congress.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ssb_list_wrapper\"><li class=\"fb2\" style=\"width:135px\"><iframe src=\"\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/like.php?href=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.gunpoliticsny.com%2F%3Fp%3D3620&amp;layout=button_count&amp;action=like&amp;show_faces=false&amp;share=true&amp;width=135&amp;height=21&amp;appId=307091639398582\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"border:none;
