the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\" target=\"_blank\">White House<\/a> budget office proposed steep cuts for the agency charged with enforcing federal gun laws &#8230; When officials at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.atf.gov\" target=\"_blank\">Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and  Explosives<\/a> saw the proposal, they concluded it would effectively  eliminate a major initiative in the fight against <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-srv\/special\/nation\/guns\/arming-mexicos-drug-cartels\/\">firearms trafficking<\/a> on the Mexican border &#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/bradycampaign.org\/media\/press\/view\/1349\/\" target=\"_blank\">Brady Bunch isn&#8217;t happy<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230; \u201cAny cuts to the already under-staffed and under-funded ATF would be a setback,\u201d said <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bradycenter.org\" target=\"_blank\">Brady Center<\/a> President Paul Helmke, \u201cbut the kinds of cuts that are rumored would be  devastating to the ATF\u2019s ability to interrupt the flow of illegal guns  across America and Mexico &#8230; These laws would be more effective and efficient because they offer a pro-active means &#8212; instead of a reactive one &#8212; to stemming the flow of guns to Mexican drug cartels and to criminals and gangs on America\u2019s streets &#8230;&#8221; &#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>They&#8217;re still trying to keep<a href=\"http:\/\/www.saysuncle.com\/2009\/03\/20\/the-mexican-canard\/\" target=\"_blank\"> the Mexican drug\/gun canard<\/a> alive. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.saysuncle.com\/2009\/03\/26\/still-more-on-the-mexican-gun-canard\/\" target=\"_blank\">People ain&#8217;t buying it<\/a>. \u00a0The notion that drug cartels are coming across the border to buy guns legally, or even illegally, from mom &amp; pop shops in Texas and Arizona is ludicrous.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230; &#8220;ATF is the ugly stepchild of every administration,&#8221; said James  Cavanaugh, a former senior ATF official &#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Why is that? \u00a0Shouldn&#8217;t the WaPo reporters have asked for an explanation for that answer because to me that is an awfully odd thing to say? \u00a0I don&#8217;t recall ever hearing an employee of another government agency say that.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps it is because the agency&#8217;s sole purpose is to restrict the freedoms of average Americans. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thoseshirts.com\/atf.html\" target=\"_blank\">ATF should be\u00a0a convenience store, not a government agency<\/a>. \u00a0Alcohol prohibition was a public policy disaster, all tobacco regulation has done is driven up the cost, while gun control policies have cost who knows how many decent people their lives. \u00a0If the White House and Congress are serious about cutting spending, they should abolish the ATF entirely.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ssb_list_wrapper\"><li class=\"fb2\" style=\"width:135px\"><iframe src=\"\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/like.php?href=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.gunpoliticsny.com%2F%3Fp%3D3359&amp;layout=button_count&amp;action=like&amp;show_faces=false&amp;share=true&amp;width=135&amp;height=21&amp;appId=307091639398582\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"border:none;
