{"id":3047,"date":"2010-12-27T10:22:56","date_gmt":"2010-12-27T15:22:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=3047"},"modified":"2010-12-27T10:22:56","modified_gmt":"2010-12-27T15:22:56","slug":"the-progressive-alternative-fails","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=3047","title":{"rendered":"The progressive alternative fails"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Rather than punish violent, antisocial deviants, a bunch of State Senators <a href=\"http:\/\/www.legislativegazette.com\/Articles-c-2009-05-04-63152.113122-Senate-announces-4-mil-for-antigang-initiative.html\" target=\"_blank\">championed Operation S.N.U.G.<\/a>, a touchy-feely anti-gun, anti-violence initiative that basically treats thugs as victims of our capitalist pig society. \u00a0Predictably, it has not gone so well as the TU reports, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.timesunion.com\/local\/article\/Job-lands-parolee-in-jail-920804.php\" target=\"_blank\">Job lands parolee in jail<\/a>&#8220;:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;The people who hired Jermal Greenwood as part of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.operationsnug.org\" target=\"_blank\">Operation SNUG<\/a>, an experimental anti-violence initiative funded by a state grant, thought his background as an ex-offender made him a &#8220;credible messenger&#8221; and a &#8220;role model&#8221; to mediate disputes in the city&#8217;s roughest neighborhoods. But his parole officer, concerned that Greenwood was bending the rules, threw him in the Albany County jail Nov. 8 after charging him with failing to abide by his curfew and correctly charge his electronic monitoring bracelet 11 times in three weeks &#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Whose dumb idea was it to promote ex-cons as role models?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230; [S.N.U.G.] was championed by Democrats in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nysenate.gov\" target=\"_blank\">state Senate<\/a> including <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nysenate.gov\/senator\/neil-d-breslin\" target=\"_blank\">Neil Breslin<\/a>, a Bethlehem Democrat, and New York City Democrats <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nysenate.gov\/senator\/malcolm-smith\" target=\"_blank\">Malcolm Smith<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ericschneiderman.com\" target=\"_blank\">Eric Schneiderman<\/a> (the incoming attorney general) as a progressive alternative to break the ongoing of cycle of violence in urban neighborhoods &#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Of course. \u00a0So, what exactly is the goal of S.N.U.G.?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230; SNUG is based on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ceasefirechicago.org\" target=\"_blank\">Project Cease Fire in Chicago<\/a>, which takes an epidemiological approach to urban violence. If the population is inoculated &#8212; children hearing stories of disputes settled by words rather than seeing street fights or shootings &#8212; and some of the worst carriers are isolated, eventually the problem goes away &#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>We already have a proven solution to isolate &#8220;the worst carriers&#8221;. \u00a0It&#8217;s called prison. \u00a0What&#8217;s wrong with that?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230; &#8220;The evidence is absolutely conclusive that traditional law enforcement approaches have not succeeded in stopping gang violence,&#8221; Schneiderman, D-Manhattan, said. &#8220;This is an all-levers approach.&#8221; \u00a0&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The evidence is absolutely conclusive that gun control != crime control, but that sure hasn&#8217;t stopped Schneiderman from promoting it. \u00a0And what exactly does an &#8220;all-levers approach&#8221; mean?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230; &#8220;The whole model is predicated on hiring credible messengers who will be able to circulate in the community among gang involved, violence involved, drug involved individuals,&#8221; [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.trinityalliancealbany.org\" target=\"_blank\">Trinity Alliance<\/a> CEO Harris Oberlander] said. \u00a0&#8220;It&#8217;s important that we begin to create a body of work, a record in the community and a sense of evidence that we&#8217;ve begun to, as the model calls for, infiltrate the community with public health messages that counteract the fact that communal violence has been on the landscape for too long.&#8221; &#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Ex-cons are not credible messengers. \u00a0Parents are. \u00a0Teachers are. \u00a0Local businessmen are. \u00a0Local clergy are. \u00a0People who have not built their lives off the misery of others are.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230;
