{"id":289,"date":"2009-09-30T08:23:26","date_gmt":"2009-09-30T12:23:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=289"},"modified":"2009-09-30T08:24:14","modified_gmt":"2009-09-30T12:24:14","slug":"yassky-eats-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=289","title":{"rendered":"Yassky eats it"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.davidyassky.com\" target=\"_blank\">David Yassky<\/a> is a former staffer to <a href=\"http:\/\/schumer.senate.gov\" target=\"_blank\">Charles Schumer<\/a>.\u00a0 He&#8217;s the guy who actually  wrote the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brady_Handgun_Violence_Prevention_Act\" target=\"_blank\">Brady Bill<\/a>.\u00a0 He moved up to the <a href=\"http:\/\/council.nyc.gov\" target=\"_blank\">City Council<\/a> where he continued to  push for more gun control like strict gun dealer liability.\u00a0 Pat, Amy and Barry  testified on behalf of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nysrpa.org\" target=\"_blank\">NYSRPA<\/a> in council hearings against these ideas.\u00a0 Yassky  himself defended them on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nranews.com\" target=\"_blank\">NRA News<\/a>.\u00a0 Faced with term limits Yassky decided to run  for City Comptroller.\u00a0 He has no background related to finance so he based his  campaign largely on his gun control record.\u00a0 Both the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/opinions\/2009\/09\/11\/2009-09-11_david_yassky_for_controller.html\" target=\"_blank\">Daily News<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/08\/24\/opinion\/24mon4.html\" target=\"_blank\">New York  Times<\/a> endorsed his campaign because of it.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nyagv.org\" target=\"_blank\">New Yorkers Against Gun Violence<\/a> founder Barbara Hohlt personally contributed to his campaign.\u00a0 His  advertisements loudly and proudly touted his work with Schumer.\u00a0 Yassky <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/blogs\/brawlforthehall\/2009\/09\/gunnies-target-candidates-rich.html\" target=\"_blank\">thought  it was funny<\/a> we were telling people to vote against him:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8230; \u201cThis is a  badge of honor for David, who has fought for tough gun control for years in  order to protect New Yorkers.\u201d &#8230;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>What did this badge of honor get him in the primary?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gothamgazette.com\/article\/campaigntrails\/20090916\/211\/3026\" target=\"_blank\">He lost with 30% of the vote<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, it was a 4-way race and the winner came up just  short of the 40% needed to prevent a runoff.\u00a0 So Yassky advanced to round two  anyway and we let fly a second GOTV mailing.\u00a0 Now going mano-a-mano with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.liunewyork.com\" target=\"_blank\">John  Liu<\/a>, Democrats would have a clear choice between the gun control candidate and  someone else in a citywide runoff.\u00a0 Yassky had something <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=242\">Richard Aborn<\/a> didn&#8217;t:  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=217\">an endorsement by Charles Schumer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And what&#8217;s Schumer&#8217;s endorsement worth?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ny1.com\/content\/top_stories\/106555\/de-blasio--liu-claim-victory-in-primary-runoff\/\" target=\"_blank\">A double digit loss<\/a>. \u00a0Yassky gets  44.3% to Liu&#8217;s 55.7%.<\/p>\n<p>Since he had to give up his Council seat to run for  Comptroller he&#8217;s got nowhere else to go so he&#8217;s outta here.\u00a0 For the second time  in as many weeks NYC Democrats have rejected the gun control candidate and their  agenda and that will further marginalize the people and organizations who  promoted them.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ssb_list_wrapper\"><li class=\"fb2\" style=\"width:135px\"><iframe src=\"\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/like.php?href=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.gunpoliticsny.com%2F%3Fp%3D289&amp;layout=button_count&amp;action=like&amp;show_faces=false&amp;share=true&amp;width=135&amp;height=21&amp;appId=307091639398582\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"border:none;
