{"id":26775,"date":"2023-02-16T09:02:59","date_gmt":"2023-02-16T14:02:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=26775"},"modified":"2023-02-16T09:03:57","modified_gmt":"2023-02-16T14:03:57","slug":"screening-judicial-candidates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=26775","title":{"rendered":"Screening judicial candidates"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There&#8217;s a myth that judicial candidates can&#8217;t talk about issues while running for office.\u00a0 Case in point, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/brooklyneagle.com\/articles\/2023\/02\/15\/judicial-candidates-contend-for-nomination-in-brooklyn-dems-community-forum\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Judicial Candidates Contend For Nomination In Brooklyn Dems\u2019 Community Forum<\/a>&#8220;:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230; Frank Teah, Program Director of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nyagv.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New Yorkers Against Gun Violence<\/a>, asked the candidates what judges can do to work with the community and law enforcement to curb gun violence and better Brooklyn. <a href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/Bernard_Graham\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Candidate Bernard Graham<\/strong><\/a><strong> pointed towards lobbying and advocating with lawmakers to end the flow of \u201cGhost Guns\u201d into our communities<\/strong> (which are causing a major uptick in murders), with candidate Kenneth E. Gayle adding that we should \u201cresist sensationalism and stick to the facts. Stick to the prescribed sentencing guidelines prescribed by the legislature and stick to the bench.\u201d Other candidates demurred more towards community involvement beyond the bench as a solution to curb crime. \u201cThere\u2019s part of being a judge that isn\u2019t on the bench,\u201d Betsy Jean Jacques said. \u201cIt\u2019s talking with young people, meeting and explaining how the law works, and empowering people to be able to advocate for their communities.\u201d &#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This is why 2A supporters (and the organizations which are supposed to represent them) need to screen judicial candidates and weed out obvious stinkers like Graham <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=26768\">and Phil Steck<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ssb_list_wrapper\"><li class=\"fb2\" style=\"width:135px\"><iframe src=\"\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/like.php?href=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.gunpoliticsny.com%2F%3Fp%3D26775&amp;layout=button_count&amp;action=like&amp;show_faces=false&amp;share=true&amp;width=135&amp;height=21&amp;appId=307091639398582\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"border:none;
