{"id":26511,"date":"2022-11-16T13:09:00","date_gmt":"2022-11-16T18:09:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=26511"},"modified":"2022-11-16T13:09:00","modified_gmt":"2022-11-16T18:09:00","slug":"gun-control-cost-gop-a-senate-seat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=26511","title":{"rendered":"Gun control cost GOP a Senate seat"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Support for &#8220;red flag&#8221; gun control cost <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nysenaterepublicans.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Republicans<\/a> a seat in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nysenate.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">State Senate<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Post-Standard <a href=\"https:\/\/www.syracuse.com\/politics\/cny\/2022\/11\/conservative-brags-of-costing-gop-a-ny-senate-seat-i-expect-ill-be-getting-a-thank-you-note.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reports<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/Justin_Coretti\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Justin Coretti<\/a> barely campaigned &#8230; And he took credit for incumbent Democrat Rachel May\u2019s win &#8230; Coretti turned out to be the spoiler in the three-way election that included incumbent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nysenate.gov\/senators\/rachel-may\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Democrat Rachel May<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/Julie_Abbott\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Republican Julie Abbott<\/a>. May won by 7,076 votes. Coretti, who ran on the Conservative Party line, received 7,104 &#8230; If the race had not been split three ways, it\u2019s likely most of Coretti\u2019s votes, if not all, would have gone to Abbott &#8230; \u201cWe had two Democrats running,\u201d Coretti said. He said Abbott was a RINO (Republican in Name Only). \u201cIf they want a shot at taking office, they need to give us someone with conservative ideals.\u201d Abbott, who is pro-choice and <strong>supports red flag gun laws<\/strong>, sought the Conservative Party line from the state party after receiving the Republican nomination. She had the nod from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cpnys.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">state Conservative Party<\/a>, but then Conservatives from Onondaga and Cayuga counties declined to endorse Abbott. Then they chose Coretti, a lawyer who works in health care, to primary her for the spot &#8230; The primary for the Conservative Party line ended up being so close it required a recount, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.syracuse.com\/politics\/2022\/09\/justin-coretti-wins-conservative-party-primary-for-ny-senate-after-recount.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Coretti won the line<\/a> &#8230; \u201cPerhaps now the Republicans will actually provide us with a decent candidate.
