{"id":2612,"date":"2010-10-28T16:22:14","date_gmt":"2010-10-28T20:22:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=2612"},"modified":"2010-10-28T16:22:14","modified_gmt":"2010-10-28T20:22:14","slug":"mccarthy-election-update","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=2612","title":{"rendered":"McCarthy election update"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/mayor\" target=\"_blank\">Mayor Mike<\/a> has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ny1.com\/content\/news_beats\/politics\/127936\/bloomberg-hits-campaign-trail-to-assist-candidates-across-party-lines\/\" target=\"_blank\">endorsed<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.votemccarthy.com\" target=\"_blank\">Carolyn McCarthy<\/a> for re-election. \u00a0Big deal.<\/p>\n<p>McCarthy herself is, of course, running as a &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/bellmore.patch.com\/articles\/becker-challenging-mccarthy-in-4th-congressional-district-5\" target=\"_blank\">national leader on gun control<\/a>&#8220;:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230;\u00a0I am a national leader on gun control and keeping our communities and our police officers safe. My opponent will be a reliable pawn for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nra.org\" target=\"_blank\">NRA<\/a> and will put our communities and police officers at risk &#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This seems unlikely given that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.beckerforcongress.com\" target=\"_blank\">Fran Becker<\/a> has already screwed gun owners over twice during his career in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nassaucountyny.gov\" target=\"_blank\">Nassau<\/a> legislature, first in 2000 by jacking up the pistol license fees and again in &#8217;08 with the colored gun ban. \u00a0Nevertheless, being a largely single issue candidate McCarthy has to bring up the gun issue or it takes away her main reason of being in Congress.<\/p>\n<p>The Long Island Press <a href=\"http:\/\/www.longislandpress.com\/2010\/10\/28\/midterm-elections-congressional-races-to-watch-in-new-york\/\" target=\"_blank\">reports<\/a> that McCarthy is herself worried about losing:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230; In the 4th District, Nassau County Legis. Francis Becker (R-Lynbrook) claims to be surging against McCarthy &#8230; His campaign manager says the Republicans \u201csmell blood,\u201d and the GOP intends to bolster his so-far anemic advertising campaign &#8230; Her campaign paints Becker as a Tea Party Republican, pointing out that his campaign had less than $22,000 on hand as of Oct. 13, compared to her $541,053 tally.
