{"id":22987,"date":"2020-12-05T12:32:31","date_gmt":"2020-12-05T17:32:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=22987"},"modified":"2020-12-05T12:32:31","modified_gmt":"2020-12-05T17:32:31","slug":"west-side-democratic-clubs-host-d-a-candidates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=22987","title":{"rendered":"West Side Democratic clubs host D.A. candidates"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A couple of local Democrat committees in Manhattan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gothamgazette.com\/state\/9962-democratic-manhattan-district-attorney-candidates-pitch-west-side-clubs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">hosted a candidate forum<\/a> for those running for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.manhattanda.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">District Attorney<\/a> next year.<\/p>\n<p>Sifting through the Gotham Gazette&#8217;s story are these nuggets:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230; <a href=\"https:\/\/dianaforda.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Diana Florence<\/a>, who formerly ran the Manhattan DA\u2019s construction fraud task force, said she was running \u201cfor people who never thought they\u2019d win\u201d and repeatedly mentioned her intention to focus on \u201ccrimes of power not crimes of poverty\u201d if elected &#8230; <strong>She also criticized the current handling of gun violence more broadly, telling attendees that \u201cwe\u2019re not attacking the problem at its source. She advocated an \u201cinterstate approach\u201d to stop gun trafficking before it reaches the city and said \u201cwe have great laws but if we\u2019re not enforcing them and stopping the source, we\u2019re not doing anything.\u201d<\/strong> &#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That&#8217;s a bit vague about going after the sources so I&#8217;m not sure what exactly she is talking about.  I&#8217;m going to assume it is some sort of liability thing as that has been a hot topic in Albany in recent years.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.taliforda.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tali Farhadian Weinstein<\/a> recounted her own personal experiences as an immigrant and said \u201cthat remains my framework for how I view the work.\u201d She says that experience has led to her \u201cto want to tear down barriers because I know what it\u2019s like to stand on the other side.\u201d She said she would bring the practices of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brooklynda.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brooklyn DA\u2019s office<\/a>, which she calls a \u201cnational model of progressive prosecution\u201d across the East River to Manhattan &#8230; When asked about alternatives to incarceration, Farhadian Weinstein said <strong>she would import practices from the Brooklyn DA\u2019s office, where she worked until recently, such as a diversion program for first-time gun offenses. Under such a program, participating in mental health counseling or job training could result in charges being dismissed.
