{"id":22460,"date":"2020-09-06T14:36:36","date_gmt":"2020-09-06T18:36:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=22460"},"modified":"2020-09-06T14:36:36","modified_gmt":"2020-09-06T18:36:36","slug":"131st-assembly-candidates-on-2a","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=22460","title":{"rendered":"131st Assembly candidates on 2A"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Daily Messenger <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mpnnow.com\/news\/20200905\/fresh-start-for-131st-assembly-district\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">has some information<\/a> on the candidates running in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latfor.state.ny.us\/maps\/2012a\/AD_map_rep_131.pdf\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">AD-131<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230; Another controversial issue \u2014 gun laws \u2014 sets the candidates apart. <a href=\"https:\/\/safeact.ny.gov\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">The SAFE Act<\/a>, passed in 2013 in the wake of the school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, prevents criminals and the dangerously mentally ill from buying guns, cracks down on illegal guns and bans the most dangerous assault weapons. Additional gun-control measures were passed last year that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nysenate.gov\/legislation\/bills\/2019\/S2448\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">ban bump stocks<\/a>, allow people to seek a court order to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nysenate.gov\/legislation\/bills\/2019\/S2451\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">ban dangerous people<\/a> from having guns, and bar school districts from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/07\/31\/nyregion\/guns-schools-ban-teachers-ny.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">letting teachers be armed<\/a>. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/GallahanforAssembly\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Republican Jeff Gallahan<\/a>] thinks the gun laws go too far and threaten law-abiding citizens. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mattmillerfornewyork.com\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Democrat Matt Miller<\/a>], who gained experience with firearms in the military, sees gun reform measures addressing public safety and not infringing on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.cornell.edu\/constitution\/second_amendment\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Second Amendment<\/a> rights.
