{"id":22171,"date":"2020-07-16T11:35:23","date_gmt":"2020-07-16T15:35:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=22171"},"modified":"2020-07-16T11:35:23","modified_gmt":"2020-07-16T15:35:23","slug":"republican-political-theater","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=22171","title":{"rendered":"Republican Political Theater"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/nyassembly.gov\/comm\/?id=7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Assembly Codes Committee<\/a> will meet tomorrow morning at 9:00am.<\/p>\n<p>In an annual event several of the (useless) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nys_am\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Republicans<\/a> have asked their pro-gun bills be on the agenda for discussion: <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nysenate.gov\/legislation\/bills\/2019\/a1755\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">A-1755<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nysenate.gov\/legislation\/bills\/2019\/a2487\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">A-2487<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nysenate.gov\/legislation\/bills\/2019\/a4428\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">A-4428<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nysenate.gov\/legislation\/bills\/2019\/a4496\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">A-4496<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nysenate.gov\/legislation\/bills\/2019\/a5376\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">A-5376<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nysenate.gov\/legislation\/bills\/2019\/a5440\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">A-5440<\/a><\/strong>. They&#8217;re not the least bit serious about any of them. This is nothing more than cheap political theater so that they can go home to their districts and say they&#8217;re standing up for 2A.<\/p>\n<p>If Republicans really wanted to stand up for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/Second-Amendment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Second Amendment<\/a> there are two things they would be doing right now:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Elected representatives and party officials would be all over in the media talking up the failure of the state&#8217;s gun control laws and demanding restoration of our civil rights and implementation of right-to-carry.<\/li>\n<li>Assembly Republicans would make <em>Motions for Discharge<\/em> on the chamber floor for their bills.\u00a0 This is an attempt to bypass Codes and bring bills up directly for a full house vote.\u00a0 This is what antigun advocates did for years in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nysenate.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Senate<\/a> when the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nysenategop\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Republicans<\/a> were in charge.
