{"id":19810,"date":"2019-08-15T16:19:04","date_gmt":"2019-08-15T20:19:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=19810"},"modified":"2019-08-15T16:19:04","modified_gmt":"2019-08-15T20:19:04","slug":"brindisi-pushes-universal-background-checks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=19810","title":{"rendered":"Brindisi pushes universal background checks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/brindisi.house.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Congressman Brindisi<\/a> spoke to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uticaod.com\/news\/20190815\/us-rep-anthony-brindisi-on-impeachment-gun-control-re-election-plans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the Observer-Dispatch<\/a> on a number of issues including guns:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230; As he\u2019s said before, Brindisi said he believes there are \u201ccommon sense\u201d reforms lawmakers could enact without restricting a person\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Second_Amendment_to_the_United_States_Constitution\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Second Amendment<\/a> rights. He believes the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.house.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">House<\/a> supports and has approved such regulations with recent legislation, saying the onus is now on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.senate.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Senate<\/a> \u2014 specifically, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/senatemajldr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell<\/a> \u2014 to bring these measures to a vote. \u201cWe passed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/house-bill-for-stronger-background-checks-on-guns-mitch-mcconnells-stalls-senate-vote\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a bipartisan bill in the House on background checks<\/a>. Mitch McConnell can call the Senate back tomorrow to pass that same bill,\u201d he said. \u201cHe\u2019s not doing that. I don\u2019t know why, but it should be done.&#8221; &#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The bill in question is <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/116th-congress\/house-bill\/8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">H.R.8<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The reason McConnell isn&#8217;t hot on it is twofold:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The universal background check is unenforceable and would have zero impact on crime.<\/li>\n<li>Gun control is a stinker of an issue.\u00a0 Bringing it up would end all chances of the Republicans retaking control of the House and would jeopardize their current majority in the Senate.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230; \u201cI don\u2019t think anyone wants to restrict a law-abiding gun owner\u2019s right to have access to a firearm,\u201d he added, \u201cBut more has to be done to keep firearms out of the hands of dangerous people, criminals, people who are violently mentally ill, folks who commit domestic abuse.
