{"id":16689,"date":"2018-05-25T09:38:59","date_gmt":"2018-05-25T13:38:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=16689"},"modified":"2018-05-25T09:38:59","modified_gmt":"2018-05-25T13:38:59","slug":"democrat-nominations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=16689","title":{"rendered":"Democrat nominations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Guns were an issue in Democrat party candidate nominations.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/news\/politics\/cuomo-vows-buying-gun-21-illegal-new-york-article-1.4007944\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">At the top of the ticket<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.andrewcuomo.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gov. Cuomo<\/a> accepted the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydems.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">state Democratic Party&#8217;s<\/a> nomination for governor by promising additional gun laws, including raising the age to purchase firearms in New York to 21 &#8230; Cuomo touted New York&#8217;s passage of his tough anti-gun control law known as the SAFE Act &#8230; and promised the state will go further if Congress won&#8217;t act. He said the state will raise the minimum age to purchase a firearm to 21, up from 18, which was somewhat of a surprise. In March he downplayed the idea by arguing that doing so nationally would have affected just 13% of the mass shootings over the past 50 years. Cuomo also again said he will push to increase the waiting period for some gun purchase background checks to 10 days, up from the current three, and also will pass a &#8220;red flag&#8221; gun law that would make it easier to confiscate guns from people considered a threat to themselves and others &#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailyfreeman.com\/article\/DF\/20180522\/NEWS\/180529933\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">And down-ballot races<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/sheriffpaulvanblarcum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ulster County Sheriff Paul VanBlarcum<\/a> was snubbed Monday evening by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulstercountydemocrats.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ulster County Democratic Committee<\/a> in favor of retired state trooper <a href=\"http:\/\/www.figueroaforsheriff.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Juan Figueroa<\/a> for the party\u2019s nomination to run for election in November. On Tuesday, VanBlarcum\u2019s campaign announced he would primary Figueroa for the Democratic Party line &#8230; Democrats took umbrage with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/post-nation\/wp\/2015\/12\/05\/sheriff-urges-licensed-gun-owners-to-arm-themselves-after-san-bernardino-shooting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Van Blarcum\u2019s viewpoints supporting widespread gun ownership<\/a>, opposing sanctuary cities and several controversial policy decisions which they said were too conservative for this year\u2019s highly polarized midterm race &#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Not a lot can be done about Cuomo, but VanBlarcum is another matter.\u00a0 He already <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailyfreeman.com\/general-news\/20180520\/independence-party-endorses-vanblarcum-for-re-election-as-ulster-county-sheriff\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has the Independence Party line<\/a> and I suspect he will get the Republican and Conservative nominations as well.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/sheriffpaulvanblarcum\/photos\/a.442606626188210.1073741829.442585252857014\/456514088130797\/?type=3&amp;theater\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Plus he has support from police unions<\/a>.\u00a0 Gun owners can push him over the finish line and give the finger to antigun bigots.\u00a0 Campaign donations can be sent to:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Elect Paul VanBlarcum<br \/>\nP.O.
