We weren&#8217;t able to broaden our background checks. We weren&#8217;t able to do the extreme risk protection order,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nysenate.gov\/senators\/andrea-stewart-cousins\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">state Sen. Andrea Stewart-Cousins<\/a>. Though it wasn\u2019t part of the budget, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.governor.ny.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gov. Andrew Cuomo<\/a> did announce the passage of a new law preventing anyone convicted of domestic abuse from owning a firearm of any type &#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Bills in question are <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nysenate.gov\/legislation\/bills\/2017\/A8976\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A-8976B<\/a>\/<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nysenate.gov\/legislation\/bills\/2017\/S7133\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">S-7133A<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nysenate.gov\/legislation\/bills\/2017\/a8717\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A-8717<\/a>\/<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nysenate.gov\/legislation\/bills\/2017\/s6918\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">S-6918<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Because some people cannot admit they are wrong, here is a reminder from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.empirecenter.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Empire Center<\/a> that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.empirecenter.org\/publications\/defund-push-misfires\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the SAFE Act cannot be defunded<\/a> in the budget.<\/p>\n<p>What did pass separately is <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nysenate.gov\/legislation\/bills\/2017\/a10272\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A-10272<\/a>\/<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nysenate.gov\/legislation\/bills\/2017\/s8121\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">S-8121<\/a><\/strong>. <a href=\"http:\/\/13wham.com\/news\/local\/legislation-to-remove-guns-from-domestic-abusers-passes-in-new-york\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Per WHAM news<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230; The legislation was passed to close a loophole in state law in order to ensure domestic abusers are required to surrender all firearms, not just handguns.
