{"id":16147,"date":"2018-03-02T09:08:36","date_gmt":"2018-03-02T14:08:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=16147"},"modified":"2018-03-02T09:08:36","modified_gmt":"2018-03-02T14:08:36","slug":"theyre-not-serious-either","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=16147","title":{"rendered":"They&#8217;re not serious either"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesunion.com\/7day-state\/article\/Schumer-Gillibrand-join-the-gold-rush-for-new-12721237.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">More political theater in Congress<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230; At a news conference, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.schumer.senate.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Schumer<\/a> laid out a three-point Democratic plan to push forward on guns &#8230; At the top of the list is expanded background checks, closing the so-called \u201cgun show loophole.\u201d &#8230; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gillibrand.senate.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gillibrand<\/a> took a more aggressive posture on the assault-weapons ban than Schumer, saying Wednesday that a military-style semiautomatic rifle such as the AR-15 &#8230; \u201chas no place in the civilian world.\u201d Schumer also pushed forward on letting family members and friends petition courts to take away guns from individuals shown to be a danger to themselves or others &#8230; &#8220;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This stuff is DOA and they know it.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/senate\/376311-mcconnell-shelves-gun-bills-for-banking-reform\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Republicans are moving on<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mcconnell.senate.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Senate Majority Leader <span class=\"rollover-people\" data-behavior=\"rolloverpeople\">Mitch McConnell<\/span> (R-Ky.)<\/a> is moving to banking reform legislation \u2014 not gun control &#8230; next week in the Senate &#8230; After that, McConnell hopes to move to legislation addressing sex trafficking, according to GOP sources &#8230; A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.republican.senate.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Senate GOP<\/a> aide said a limited bill to strengthen background checks for firearms purchases could come to the floor at any moment as soon as Democrats agree to let it move forward &#8230; \u201cWe tried to get it cleared yesterday, but the Democratic leader objected,\u201d McConnell said &#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/115th-congress\/senate-bill\/2135\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>S-2135<\/strong><\/a> has 49 bi-partisan co-sponsors.\u00a0 What&#8217;s up with the bill?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/EdMorrissey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ed Morrissey<\/a> notes <a href=\"https:\/\/hotair.com\/archives\/2018\/02\/28\/wapo-senate-dems-torpedoing-gun-bill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fix-NICS would likely pass<\/a> &#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230; Fix-NICS would almost certainly pass for two reasons. One: It addresses an actual problem that actually contributed to a mass shooting &#8230; Two, and more importantly: Fix-NICS doesn\u2019t intrude on the right to bear arms &#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8230; and Democrats don&#8217;t really want that:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230; \u201cA lot of us have a feeling that 2018 is going to be the first year in which this issue is a true liability to Republicans who refuse to break from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nra.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NRA<\/a> at all,\u201d said <a href=\"http:\/\/www.murphy.senate.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.)<\/a>, who organized the meeting. \u201cWe also want to make sure that all of these new entrants into the issue stick with us into the elections.
