{"id":15849,"date":"2018-01-28T12:02:42","date_gmt":"2018-01-28T17:02:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=15849"},"modified":"2018-01-28T12:02:42","modified_gmt":"2018-01-28T17:02:42","slug":"if-republicans-are-serious-then-they-should-do-this","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=15849","title":{"rendered":"If Republicans are serious then they should do this"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The deadline for pistol license recertification is this Wednesday.\u00a0 All indications point to a major clusterfuck with somewhere in the neighborhood of 500,000 to 1 million license holders not complying for one reason or another.<\/p>\n<p>Some Republican legislators have sent out glowing press releases about how they&#8217;ve introduced legislation to extend the deadline.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s nothing but cheap, political theater.<\/p>\n<p>First, look at the bills.\u00a0 The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nysenate.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Senate<\/a> bill <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nysenate.gov\/legislation\/bills\/2017\/S7343\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>S-7343<\/strong><\/a> extends the deadline through March.\u00a0 The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nyassembly.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Assembly<\/a> bill <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nysenate.gov\/legislation\/bills\/2017\/A9086\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>A-9086<\/strong><\/a> introduced a couple weeks later extends it through January 2019.\u00a0 Legislators are clearly not on the same page.<\/p>\n<p>Second, and this is the most important, is that neither sponsors have made even the slightest effort to advance their bills.\u00a0 With so little time remaining Republicans have one option left, make a <em>Motion to Discharge<\/em> to move their bills out of committee and to the floor.<\/p>\n<p>In years past, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorksenatedems.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Senate Democrats<\/a> would try this to advance antigun bills and the <em>Motions<\/em> were always defeated along party lines.\u00a0 I cannot recall <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nyracc.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Assembly Republicans<\/a> ever doing it for pro-gun bills.\u00a0 If they did now I would expect the same result, but it would at least highlight the issue.\u00a0 As for the Senate, this would require Republican Senators going against their own &#8220;leadership&#8221; who voted for SAFE in the first place.\u00a0 That is something they would never do.<\/p>\n<p>Thus is exposed the fraud Republicans are trying to put over on the public.\u00a0 They have no desire to stand up for gun rights.\u00a0 They&#8217;re just hoping for some good press to quiet down angry constituents and hopefully get them through their next elections.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ssb_list_wrapper\"><li class=\"fb2\" style=\"width:135px\"><iframe src=\"\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/like.php?href=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.gunpoliticsny.com%2F%3Fp%3D15849&amp;layout=button_count&amp;action=like&amp;show_faces=false&amp;share=true&amp;width=135&amp;height=21&amp;appId=307091639398582\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"border:none; overflow:hidden;  width:150px; height:21px;\" allowTransparency=\"true\"><\/iframe><\/li><li class=\"twtr\" style=\"width:90px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/share\" class=\"twitter-share-button\" data-url=\"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=15849\">&nbsp;<\/a><script>!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0],p=\/^http:\/.test(d.location)?'http':'https';if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=p+':\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js';fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document, 'script', 'twitter-wjs');<\/script><\/li><li class=\"gplus\" style=\"width:68px\"><div class=\"g-plusone\" data-size=\"medium\" data-href=\"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=15849\"><\/div><\/li><li class=\"ssb_linkedin\" style=\"width:64px\"><script src=\"\/\/platform.linkedin.com\/in.js\" type=\"text\/javascript\">lang: en_US<\/script><script type=\"IN\/Share\" data-url=\"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=15849\" data-counter=\"right\"><\/script><\/li><\/ul>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The deadline for pistol license recertification is this Wednesday.\u00a0 All indications point to a major clusterfuck with somewhere in the neighborhood of 500,000 to 1 million license holders not complying for one reason or another.
