{"id":15598,"date":"2017-12-24T11:59:18","date_gmt":"2017-12-24T16:59:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=15598"},"modified":"2017-12-24T11:59:18","modified_gmt":"2017-12-24T16:59:18","slug":"beating-cuomo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=15598","title":{"rendered":"Beating Cuomo?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wamc.org\/people\/alan-chartock\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pundit Alan Chartock<\/a> was in love with <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mario_Cuomo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mario Cuomo<\/a>, so much so that if given the opportunity back in the day I believe he would have married him.<\/p>\n<p>That love has not passed on to his offspring <a href=\"http:\/\/www.governor.ny.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Andrew<\/a>, but Chartock still has a bias towards Junior which is evident in his latest op-ed, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.saratogian.com\/article\/ST\/20171221\/NEWS\/171229949\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Beating Cuomo? It could happen<\/a>&#8220;:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;Knowing a little bit about Andrew Cuomo, I address the question of whether he could possibly lose the 2018 election. Despite the odds being against it, there are some who believe he could lose &#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I agree.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230; In the \u201cIt\u2019s impossible for him to lose\u201d corner, consider the following: Fact: 2018 is going to be a landslide Democratic year. Republicans are going to be thrown out on their behinds &#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I don&#8217;t believe that. The tax cut Congress passed is huge and <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2017\/12\/23\/tax-cuts-are-already-benefiting-american-workers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">will have a major positive effect<\/a> on the country before the elections.\u00a0 It&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsday.com\/business\/dayton-brown-bonus-tax-overhaul-1.15558551\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">already helping people<\/a> on Long Island.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230; Fact: Andrew Cuomo has at least $26 million dollars (and probably a lot more) in his campaign account and his toney Hollywood and sports friends are throwing big bucks events for him &#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>True.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230; Fact: Andrew\u2019s last name is Cuomo and in New York City where the Democrats are, that name is gold &#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Not exactly. A lot of Democrats <b>hate<\/b> him.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230; Fact: his brother <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ChrisCuomo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chris<\/a>, who looks and even sounds a bit like him, is on TV all the time, beating up those nasty Republicans on an almost daily basis &#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Irrelevant.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230; Fact: the <a href=\"http:\/\/auburnpub.com\/blogs\/eye_on_ny\/eye-on-ny-potential-ny-gop-candidates-for-governor-inch\/article_c3c2592c-d20b-11e7-8d1a-e791b0e48787.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">list of Republican contenders<\/a> is so weak that it gives new meaning to the word \u201cpathetic.\u201d &#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>True.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230; Fact: <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/realDonaldTrump\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Donald Trump<\/a> is so despised in the state of New York that all Andrew has to do is to tie his opponent to Trump and New York voters will respond with vigor &#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Not exactly.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/elections\/results\/new-york\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trump won most counties outside NYC<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230; In the \u201cOn the other hand, Andrew does have a lot to worry about\u201d corner, consider this: Fact: his closest associates are on trial for wholesale wrongdoing &#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>True, but irrelevant given that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.politifact.com\/new-york\/statements\/2016\/sep\/19\/elaine-phillips\/new-york-has-been-most-corrupt-state-decades\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York leads the nation<\/a> in corrupt public officials.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230; Fact: when he first won office, Cuomo came on as a bit of a conservative &#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>By that Chartock means Cuomo governed to the right of <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SenSanders\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bernie Sanders<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230; Fact: liberals throughout New York state have had it out for Cuomo for his center right policies &#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Not exactly.\u00a0 They&#8217;ve had it out for him because his left of center policies do not go far enough.\u00a0 Plus, he&#8217;s not embraced the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorksenatedems.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mainline Senate Democrat caucus<\/a> because he correctly recognizes them as clowns.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230; Fact: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/how-nyc-subways-got-so-bad-nyt-report-2017-11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the New York City subways are a mess<\/a> and no matter how much Cuomo tries to put the blame for that on <a href=\"http:\/\/www1.nyc.gov\/office-of-the-mayor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mayor Bill de Blasio<\/a>, Cuomo himself made it clear that the subway mess was his own fault &#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That is actually unfair to the Governor.\u00a0 The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mta.info\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MTA<\/a> has been a mess for decades.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230; He could lose in a primary and he could lose in a general election, just like his father did &#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>True, however, it would require two things to happen. First, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nygop.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GOP<\/a> would have to get their act together and I&#8217;ve seen no signs of that. Second, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydems.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Democrats<\/a> would have to unite in their efforts to boot him.
