{"id":15362,"date":"2017-11-08T11:21:24","date_gmt":"2017-11-08T16:21:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=15362"},"modified":"2017-11-08T11:21:24","modified_gmt":"2017-11-08T16:21:24","slug":"election-aftermath-7","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=15362","title":{"rendered":"Election aftermath"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Gun owners did not do well in yesterday&#8217;s election.\u00a0 Moving from Long Island, here are the results:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.zacareseforsheriff.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Larry Zacarese<\/a>, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsday.com\/long-island\/politics\/larry-zacarese-beats-phil-boyle-in-gop-primary-for-suffolk-sheriff-1.14152946\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">defeated antigun Phil Boyle<\/a> in the GOP primary in part due to his SAFE Act vote, <a href=\"http:\/\/longisland.news12.com\/story\/36790115\/toulon-jr-edges-out-victory-in-race-for-suffolk-county-sheriff\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lost to Democrat Errol Toulon<\/a> in the general election by ~1300 votes.\u00a0 A 3rd party candidate received several thousand votes.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lauracurran2017.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Laura Curran<\/a> defeated <a href=\"http:\/\/www.martinsfornassau.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jack Martins<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsday.com\/long-island\/nassau\/martins-curran-nassau-executive-1.14821836\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nassau County Executive&#8217;s race<\/a>.\u00a0 Both are antigun, but Martins is worse given his SAFE Act vote.<\/li>\n<li>Incumbent<a href=\"http:\/\/www.robastorino.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Rob Astorino<\/a> lost to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimerforwestchester.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">George Latimer<\/a> in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lohud.com\/story\/news\/politics\/elections\/2017\/11\/08\/latimer-wins-westchester-executive\/836607001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Westchester County Executive&#8217;s race<\/a>.\u00a0 Latimer campaigned on a gun control platform and I expect he will<a href=\"http:\/\/newyork.cbslocal.com\/2017\/09\/05\/westchester-gun-show-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> take action against gun shows<\/a> at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.countycenter.biz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">County Center<\/a> once he takes office.\u00a0 I&#8217;m guessing this ends <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nystateofpolitics.com\/2016\/02\/astorino-absolutely-considering-another-run-for-governor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Astorino&#8217;s rumored second gubernatorial bid<\/a> as well.<\/li>\n<li>Pro-gun incumbent <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Donald_B._Smith\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sheriff Donald Smith<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/highlandscurrent.com\/2017\/11\/07\/langley-defeats-smith-become-putnam-sheriff\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lost to Robert Langley in Putnam County<\/a>.\u00a0 Guns were not an issue, <a href=\"http:\/\/highlandscurrent.com\/2017\/08\/04\/county-releases-statement-on-sheriff-settlement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Smith had other problems<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Pro-gun <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/stevemcny\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Assemblyman Steve McLaughlin<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.troyrecord.com\/general-news\/20171108\/mclaughlin-declares-victory-in-race-for-rensselaer-county-executive\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">won his race for Rensselaer County Executive<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Pro-gun incumbent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sheriffoflynn.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sheriff Patrick O\u2019Flynn<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/wxxinews.org\/post\/todd-baxter-wins-monroe-county-sheriffs-race\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lost to Todd Baxter in Monroe County<\/a>.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t believe guns were an issue.<\/li>\n<li>Pro-gun incumbent <a href=\"http:\/\/wivb.com\/2017\/11\/08\/tim-howard-re-elected-erie-county-sheriff\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sheriff Tim Howard<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/spectrumlocalnews.com\/nys\/buffalo\/politics\/2017\/11\/07\/erie-county-clerk-election\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mickey Kearns<\/a> won their respective races in Erie County, <a href=\"http:\/\/buffalonews.com\/2017\/11\/08\/howard-claims-victory-with-slim-lead-as-gop-claims-clerk-and-comptroller\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">although the results were close<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Even before the election, Democrats made it known they would <a href=\"http:\/\/www.timesunion.com\/news\/article\/Gun-control-will-likely-resound-in-Senate-this-12338767.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">make a push for more gun control in Albany<\/a> when the legislature returns to sessions in January:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230; Will gun control supplant abortion rights as a wedge issue in 2018? It may, at least in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nysenate.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">state Senate<\/a> &#8230; Now <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorksenatedems.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Senate Democrats<\/a>, in the wake of recent mass shootings, <a href=\"http:\/\/nypost.com\/2017\/11\/07\/texas-shooter-yelled-everybody-die-motherf-ker\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">including Sunday\u2019s murder of 26 people in Sutherland Springs, Texas<\/a>, are poised to launch a push for tougher gun laws with January\u2019s legislative session &#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Of course they are.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230; Still, if history is a predictor, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nysenategop.net\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Senate Republicans<\/a> will likely reject tougher gun control laws just as they have with abortion rights &#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Don&#8217;t count on that.
