{"id":15296,"date":"2017-10-31T12:22:58","date_gmt":"2017-10-31T16:22:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=15296"},"modified":"2017-10-31T12:22:58","modified_gmt":"2017-10-31T16:22:58","slug":"support-the-con-con","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=15296","title":{"rendered":"Support the Con Con"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There will be a question on the November ballot asking whether or not the state should hold a constitutional convention.\u00a0 If approved there would be future votes on choosing delegates then actual changes to the constitution.<\/p>\n<p>Looking at it from strictly a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Second_Amendment_to_the_United_States_Constitution\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2A<\/a> perspective, I don&#8217;t believe there is much to get out of a Con Con:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>For antigunners, there&#8217;s no real need.\u00a0 The legislature can pass gun control bills at will.\u00a0 The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.governor.ny.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Governor<\/a> just does not want more of it right now.<\/li>\n<li>For pro-gunners, it&#8217;s doubtful we would get anything through.\u00a0 I could see a creatively crafted re-wording of the pistol licensing law prohibiting discrimination that would make the state &#8220;shall issue&#8221;, but would it pass the voters?\u00a0 Probably not.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>With 2A off the table, the benefits of a Con Con to gun owners would be indirect.\u00a0 I can see these items proposed and passed:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Term limits.\u00a0 Far too many old farts have been around for 30+ years.\u00a0 Albany needs new blood.<\/li>\n<li>Fair redistricting.\u00a0 Districts look as if someone sneezed on a map.\u00a0 Doing it fairly would wipe out the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nygop.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Republicans<\/a>, but that is going to happen anyway.<\/li>\n<li>End to fusion ballots.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These would make elections much more competitive thereby giving gun owners more clout and that is what we sorely need in Albany.<\/p>\n<p>Who is opposing the Con Con?\u00a0 The bulk of the money is coming from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nystateofpolitics.com\/2017\/10\/anti-con-con-group-spends-big-on-tv\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unions and lawyers<\/a>.\u00a0 They&#8217;re not antigun per se, but are largely responsible for the culture of cronyism and corruption.\u00a0 If their power is diminished that is a good thing.<\/p>\n<p>Vote <strong>Yes<\/strong> on the Con Con.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ssb_list_wrapper\"><li class=\"fb2\" style=\"width:135px\"><iframe src=\"\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/like.php?href=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.gunpoliticsny.com%2F%3Fp%3D15296&amp;layout=button_count&amp;action=like&amp;show_faces=false&amp;share=true&amp;width=135&amp;height=21&amp;appId=307091639398582\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"border:none; overflow:hidden;  width:150px; height:21px;\" allowTransparency=\"true\"><\/iframe><\/li><li class=\"twtr\" style=\"width:90px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/share\" class=\"twitter-share-button\" data-url=\"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=15296\">&nbsp;<\/a><script>!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0],p=\/^http:\/.test(d.location)?'http':'https';if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=p+':\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js';fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document, 'script', 'twitter-wjs');<\/script><\/li><li class=\"gplus\" style=\"width:68px\"><div class=\"g-plusone\" data-size=\"medium\" data-href=\"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=15296\"><\/div><\/li><li class=\"ssb_linkedin\" style=\"width:64px\"><script src=\"\/\/platform.linkedin.com\/in.js\" type=\"text\/javascript\">lang: en_US<\/script><script type=\"IN\/Share\" data-url=\"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=15296\" data-counter=\"right\"><\/script><\/li><\/ul>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There will be a question on the November ballot asking whether or not the state should hold a constitutional convention.\u00a0 If approved there would be future votes on choosing delegates then actual changes to the constitution.
