{"id":15049,"date":"2017-09-18T16:02:11","date_gmt":"2017-09-18T20:02:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=15049"},"modified":"2017-09-18T16:02:11","modified_gmt":"2017-09-18T20:02:11","slug":"2a-supporters-havent-forgotten","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=15049","title":{"rendered":"2A supporters haven&#8217;t forgotten"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nysenate.gov\/senators\/phil-boyle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Phil Boyle&#8217;s<\/a> flip-flopping on gun rights (by my count at least 3 times) doomed his bid for Sheriff.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.newsday.com\/long-island\/columnists\/rick-brand\/larry-zacarese-showed-savvy-in-suffolk-sheriff-s-primary-win-1.14193066\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">According to Newsday<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230; [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.zacareseforsheriff.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Larry Zacarese<\/a>] showed the savvy of a veteran political operative last week when he tapped a crucial and highly energized bloc: Gun owners who were angry at his opponent, state Sen. Phil Boyle, for voting for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.governor.ny.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo\u2019s<\/a> gun-control measure known as the SAFE Act. Zacarese &#8230; drubbed Boyle in a GOP primary, in part due to two mailings to 3,000 gun owners throughout Suffolk. Zacarese also did ads on two local radio stations on the East End, where the gun issue is a significant concern and where the sheriff\u2019s department handles gun licensing. As a freshman senator, Boyle voted for the SAFE Act but said shortly thereafter that his vote \u201cwas a mistake.\u201d Boyle further angered gun users by saying he might have realized the mistake \u201cif we were given more than two hours to read the bill.\u201d &#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Boyle was lying about gun rights before voting for SAFE.\u00a0 That was just the final straw.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230; Gun owners are a powerful bloc in low-turnout primaries \u2014 about 7 percent of Republicans voted Tuesday in the sheriff\u2019s race \u2014 because they vote in force. That also gives them clout beyond their numbers in a general election.
