{"id":14979,"date":"2017-09-01T10:33:49","date_gmt":"2017-09-01T14:33:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=14979"},"modified":"2017-09-01T10:33:49","modified_gmt":"2017-09-01T14:33:49","slug":"schneidermans-backdoor-attack-on-remington","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.gunpoliticsny.com\/?p=14979","title":{"rendered":"Schneiderman&#8217;s backdoor attack on Remington"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A group of State Attorney&#8217;s General, including <a href=\"http:\/\/ww.ag.ny.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Eric Schneiderman<\/a>, have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationallawjournal.com\/id=1202797032288\/State-AGs-Take-Aim-at-Each-Other-Over-Remington-Gun-Settlement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">filed a brief<\/a> asserting the deal <a href=\"http:\/\/www.remington.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Remington<\/a> made to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/popular-remington-700-rifle-linked-to-potentially-deadly-defects-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">correct &#8220;defective&#8221; rifles<\/a> poses a threat to public safety:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230; This week, a group of attorneys general from 11 states fired back at a competing coalition that claims the settlement with Remington Arms Co. threatens public safety. Under the deal, owners of 7.5 million model 700 series rifles would get retrofits or refunds to fix an alleged defect that causes the rifle to unintentionally fire. But only 0.29 percent of class members have submitted claims, a claims rate that\u2019s become the target of class notice critics. That means that most of the gun owners aren\u2019t even aware their rifles could cause deaths and injuries, according to an amicus brief filed last month by 10 states, including Massachusetts, California, New York, Pennsylvania and the District of Columbia &#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Their beef is that Remington&#8217;s statement to stop using the rifles in question until they have been inspected is not enough.<\/p>\n<p>The response from the Alabama A.G. is spot on:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;&#8230; <a href=\"http:\/\/ago.state.al.us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall<\/a> blasted the group of \u201cliberal AGs\u201d for trying to \u201cinject firearms regulation\u201d into the settlement, which resolves class actions brought over economic damages, not injuries or deaths. \u201cThe criticisms Massachusetts and its companion states have lodged are not grounded in any concern about boosting the plaintiffs\u2019 economic recovery, but are instead an unwarranted effort to use this litigation to achieve other policy goals about firearms regulation in general,\u201d Marshall wrote in an amicus brief unsealed Wednesday &#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The entire Remington trigger lawsuit seemed funny from the start.\u00a0 If there was a serious problem, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thefirearmblog.com\/blog\/2017\/08\/11\/sig-p320-problems-questions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">like with the new SIGs<\/a>, it would be all over the internet and I have not seen that.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ssb_list_wrapper\"><li class=\"fb2\" style=\"width:135px\"><iframe src=\"\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/like.php?href=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.gunpoliticsny.com%2F%3Fp%3D14979&amp;layout=button_count&amp;action=like&amp;show_faces=false&amp;share=true&amp;width=135&amp;height=21&amp;appId=307091639398582\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"border:none;
